New Tubb 6 XC Brass

6 XC

I apologize for this 1st long posting regarding the Tubb 6 XC Brass

Background: I am primarily a short range benchrest hobbyist with an interest also in X-C and long range disciplines. I began a search for an XC/ LR 6 MM cartridge which could provide comparable performance with 6.5-284 cartridge. My criteria was to be able to launch a bullet with a similar BC to the 139/142 Gr 6.5 MM bullets at in the 2900 -3200 Fps velocity range; better barrel life than the 6.5-284 and the larger 6 MM cartridges and case capacity between 6 BR and the 243/244 Ackley. This lead to scrutinizing the 6-250 and the Tubb 6mm XC.

I was impressed with the features of the McMillan/Tubb 2K and acquired one in 2003. For the XC and LR, this has all the benefits of the bolt action plus the benefits of the AR configuration. Free floating and guard, interchangeable barrels, many sight options plus a magnificent 2 stage trigger and an infinitely adjustable stock configuration. After the initial testing, in 05 I built an F Class type B/R also using the 6XC with a .270 neck and an 8 twist barrel.

-From the beginning of my experimentation, the Tubb Brass was not available and the search began to find brass capable of providing adequate performance. I ventured into the brass testing world, testing Remington, Winchester, Nosler and Norma. To the end, the Winchester and Remington would not hold up shooting the 115 Gr Tubb Bullets in the 2950 – 3050 fps velocity range; showing measured case head expansion and the primer pockets opened up in 1 or 2 firings. Nosler and Norma were so-so, Norma being only slightly better. Note lighter weight bullets performed well with most brass.

- In January 2005, I order approximately 600 cartridges cases from Superior Shooting, which were delivered with some begging one year later. I inspected and categorized the brass with the following results:
i. Weight of the 620 pieces 612 weighted within 3 grains, 7 of the remaining 8 weighted on the high side with the 8th case weighing 7 Gr heavier.
ii. Flash Hole are only partially punched and the last .060 of flash hole are punched and needed be reamed with an .080 or #46 ,.081) to uniform the flash holes
iii. Neck thickness varied from .013 to .015 and all the brass can be trued to .013
iv. Rim / Case Head thickness varies from .053 to > .058. Of the 620 lot, 142 cases would not fit into a reloading case holder >.054 which were returned to SS
v. Overall acceptance and performance of the Tubb Brass , They Call it the 4th Generation) after sorting, classification and proper case preparation the brass performs better than all other available 220250 brass. The brass is very strong; shooting the 115 Gr Tubb Naked @ 3000 FPM the brass holds up will, no loose primer pockets or case head expansion.

- The F-Class has a Krieger barrel which is tighter than the T2K Schneider and the 2K/ Schneider will launch the same load approximately 60- 75 FPS faster than the Krieger barrel.. The F Class/ Krieger will shoot a tighter group: @ 100 and 200 Yds, the barrel will agg in the low to mid .2 range and the best group long range group so far has been 2.27’ at 500 Meters on a fairly calm TX day without wind flags.

- At the recent Lone Star shoot out in Stevensville, TX, the F-class 6XC was only bested by the top 5 shooters all using 6.5-284’s, on a very wind, ~ 15 -20 mph with varying gusts) and hot day, high 90’s). I believe if some of the better wind readers at the match which were using the 6.5’s had been using an 6XC they would have still been within the top 5 of the fifty some shooters.

I am now convinced David Tubb’s new 4th generation brass has solved the brass and performance problems encountered with the other brass and we will begin to see more and better performance from the 6Xc Cartridge.

What’s next, it’s rumored that Norma will be making the 6XC brass, When?? I’ll believe it when I have some in my hand. I’ll evaluate the Norma vice the Tubb Generation 4 and make a decision. What I know now, I’ll probably be ordering more when David has the next batch available.

Thank you Mr. Tubb

Just to keep you informed
Norma is about to make 6XC brass
SSS is still waiting on the the next 6XC batch from Nevada,
Quite interesting about the 6.5x47 Lapua--

David,

As expected, they are a bit late. They have about 120' left of a big
30-06 run in the first drawing machines. That will take three or four
more days than half a day to retool. After that we begin with the first
drawings. At the same time the 30-06 cases clear each machine, they
retool and the XC follows. If everything works I guess we have finsished
but not clean cases in the middle of first week in May. If they are
good, 25' will be made each day.
The shooter who used the XC last year tested the 6.5x47 earlier but he
could not make it shoot good enough with the material he got from Lapua
/ Grunig&Elmiger. The data they show was fired in 28"+ barrels.

I won't be here until next week.

All the best,
Christer

I try to not go head to head with the 6XC out of respect for David Tubb.

However, this brass issue/no issue has got me scratching my head.

With the 6mmCompetitionMatch you can shoot, any commercially made, 243 brass.

You can easily shoot 3100 fps from the 115 with as good or better accuracy.

I have to wonder about waiting for and wanting brass. When you can shoot something else that does the same thing or more, and the brass is available every day and you can choose the manufacturer.

David's products are first class.

However, the 6XC's issues with brass and barrel life have some negatives.

The 6CM will give you 3100 fps from the 115 and 3000 rounds from the first chambering. And you use 243 brass.
