22ARC

I’m very interested in how they’re going to back up the claims of “22-250 performance” in what I am assuming is a 22 PPC / 224 Valkyrie size case. I guess a 88 ELD at 2750fps probably performs like a 52 VMax at 3800fps when you go out to 600 yards? They suspiciously do not mention any specifications or speeds attained.

I am surprised this isn't being discussed.

Me too of course it was just announced. Hornady is really good at making claims of performance on new cartridges to hook customers but seem to always fall short of their claims on the actual true performance. Not that the cartridges aren't pretty decent performers and do well in the market but saying it rivals the 22-250 then offers the 75 grain bullet at 3075 from a 24" barrel isn't rivaling a 22-250. At best, its a challenger. That's great performance form an AR platform for sure. My 223s run almost at 3000 with 75 grain bullets. Should feed very well from an AR and be a great new offering from them either way

I'm guessing the 22 ARC will end up with the Gas Vs Bolt loading limits that the 6mm ARC has.
Mag length OAL seems to be an important issue, at least for the AR crowd.

Will be interesting to see how the various barrel/upper/rifle suppliers try to get this right.
It's this 'gotta fit in an AR mag' thing with heavy bullets that limits fast 22 cal designs.
I jumped on the 22 Nosler, even with the bad press.
I wanted a slow fire 600/1000yd low recoil AR for paper.
Most of the complaints with the 22N was with the brass but that seemed to me caused by gas issues.
I start losing pockets at 5 to 6 firings, never ever gonna make 20.
My cases grow and need trimming each time.
My 28" velocity with 85.5s is right at 3000fps (with SB6.5) but they are LONG :)

Yawn. Just another flavor of the month. I shot 220 Thunderbolt (6 Hagar necked down to 224) for many years. 77 TMK @ 3100 out of AR and excellent brass life. I tested it heavily against the 224V and the 224V couldn't hang at the speeds Hornady initially advertised without loose pockets after first firing. And if you loaded to where you could actually reload your brass I had to stay below 2900....

Don't see B.C. or length yet for the ELD-VT 62gr.
With the rearward weight bias and longer length stability will likely be improved, but is that needed with a 62gr plastic tipped bullet?
With all that air space up front seating might be an issue.

Hornady lists the 22 ARC, 2820fps with an 88 ELD-M @ 52000 PSI. Is that with a 24" test barrel?
Will it have a higher MAP for bolt gun hand loads?

I guess they just necked the 6 ARC down to get it. It legitimizes the 220. I built a 22 Beggs Russian a few years back and it shoots good. Gene was years ahead on that project but they legetimised it with a factory offering. Now they'll produce ammo too so it's not all bad.

The podcast mentioned the 22 ARC case is “a little longer” and not a straight neck down version.

Yes, as I understand it, the 22 version is a 22 Grendel but the 6mm is a shorter ARC specific length, between a Grendel and a PPC. I don't know but I suspect this was due to proprietary claims to the 6mm version, probably the 6AR specifically. IMO Whitley made it a habit to claim things as his own whether true or not. He's also a lawyer, fwiw. My guess is he threatened to sue and it was easier for Hornady to work around him on the 6mm, by changing it just a bit. He claims the 30 cal version as his too but I have what's termed prior art documentation on it and he won't share details publicly but claims it's different than a 30 Major...just won't say how. But he does say it's a necked up 30 Grendel. Lol!

I'm chambering a couple of bbls now in the 22 ARC but it won't be the saami version. I got word that the Hornady 22 ARC was coming out before it was announced and gave the customer the option and he said to go with the 6ARC length so that's what I'm doing..fwiw. No more difference than there is, I could have just run his reamer in deep and use Grendel hs guages.

You say almost 3,000 out of 223 75gr bullets? Is that a gas gun? What is your load? My 224 Valkyrie pushes a 75gr ELD at 2900 in front of 25gs of Re#15.5 and that's a 23"bbl. What am I doing wrong?

I'm more than happy with my 22 DTI, which is the 6.8 SPC necked down & a slight shoulder change to 30*.

52 Bergers at 3500 in a 20" tube.

My 220 Thunderbolt AR15 mag length 22" barrel throws 77TMK with RE15 @ 3050... stupid accurate too... Hornady 6 Hagar necked down to 22 neck. Never understood why Hornady didn't make this their new 224 AR15 round. They already make the 6 Hagar brass.

I also have a longer throated 220TB bolt gun that shoots 90smk @ 3000.

These are the conservative load with long brass life..
