22 cal bullets for whitetail

I know im opening a can of worms here by asking this, but what bullets are you guys using in your 22-250s for deer? I know ....I know..... they arent made for deer, but i I also know they work very well on smaller tn deer with correct shot placement. thought about some barnes ttsx in 52gr. any experience out there?

63g Sierra, 55g Hornady, 60g Hornady Sp, all barnes triple shock, 60g Nosler partition on 12" twists and tigher, 64g Nosler bonded

Nuff said!

I have a custom mauser in 22-250 and use the barnes tsx and have used the 53gr and 55gr. I have shot mule deer and whitetails and have had none off them run. All have them have just dropped right there.

I did some with the Nosler Partion with CFE 223 for powder. I forget size and powder but from an AR at 85 yards there was no pass through and the doe ran 30 yards and keeled over. He said the lungs were turned into jello.

Personally I would go with a solid bullet like barnes due to the cartridge that you will be shooting it from. Will hold together better on impact and hopefully give better penetration. If it works it works but two holes are better than one for bleeding out of.

I got 60 grain Nosler Partition bullets to shoot decent out of a 14 twist .22-250, so they might stabilize for you.

Jreed, I'd try the 52 gr Barnes if I had a 14 or 12 twist. I haven't used the 52's but I have used the 70gr tsx out of my 9 twist 22-250 with excellent results. The deer act just like they've been hit with a .270 or '06 ;D. FWIW I'm more impressed with the 22-250 & 70gr tsx than I am the 100 gr core-lokt .243 loads.
Good luck, alton9

The 53gr x bullet works wonder for my dad the last two years. Dead bucks at 265 yards and 195 yards. Shot a few does with them as well. His 14 twist will stabilize them (old ruger we think its faster than its suppsoed to be) but barnes says use a 12 twist.

In that case you could drop down to the 50.

Great deer bullets in my opinion.

I can tell you for sure that a large whitetail doe hit with a Sierra 55gr Spitzer/ boatail #1365 out of a 22 250 will go down like hit by lightening. Aim point was neck/shoulder junction. Very accurate overall as well.

How come there have not been posts about the deer that had to
be tracked into the next county?
I have shot deer through the heart with a 7 mag and had it run 200 yards.

In NZ we use 55gr TSX in 223. This nails all deer. No escapees from 20m to 370m.Rolled up some 55gr TTSX just recently but untried. If there is such a thing as the Holy Grail in projectiles the TSX must be on the podium. ;)

When we culled deer with .223 we would center brain them at 15-25yds over bait using 50-55gr V-Max. However...many secondary targets would get shot at 75-200yds (broadside shots only) and none ever ran beyond 40yds, with many dropping at the bullet impact. The V-Max would emulsify everything north of the diaphragm and very seldom did you ever find jacket material or lead that reached the far ribcage. Inside of the deer, it was an utter mess.

Would I shoot that bullet if I were doing other than a controlled cull? No, because you don't always get picture perfect broadside shots and there is no urgency to take angular shots like you many times will be presented with while hunting. Def look for something harder and deeper penetrating.

I have used a few different bullets in my Swifts for Deer since 1976. Just about all worked well, some better than others. I have settled on the Hornady 60 gr HP, with the 55 gr Hornady sp a close second. Should work in your 22-250. My sil uses the 55 and some of my buddies use them to, with great results, in 22-250's. Any of the TSX or TTSx will work fine as far as killing deer goes. I've shot a bunch of them out of an AR & even the light bullets will exit thru a shoulder. Best it gets.

I wonder why no one has mentioned the .224 Swift Scirocco 75g BT polymer tip bonded bullets? They have a tapered jacket and bonded like the Nosler Trophy Bullets do. I know they recommend a 1-8 twist barrel, but it seems they would be the ultimate .224 bullet for deer and would not shed velocity like a 50-60g bullet does. In fact I just bought 200 to try in my 22BR with a 1-8 twist Bartlein barrel. Plan to let my 13 year old son shoot us a doe for meat and see what it does. Anyone tried them? I know they are expensive, $53 per 100, but so are most all good premium bonded bullets! Samuel Hall

Try any Barnes TSX that your rifle will stabilize. They all shoot pretty well in my .22-6mm with 8 twist, 70grs at over 3700fps. Only problem is barrel life. The bullets will stand it without any problems.

That is a horse that has been beat to death on this forum. People are going to use .22 calibers, so the best the rest of us can do is at least recommend a bullet that should work.
