22 cal bullets for whitetail

Shot a few with the 63 Sierra shoft point. A couple through the lungs, but neck is preferred. None went more than 15 yards. All does and under 200 yards.

My go to rifle for all the kids we take out is a 22-250 w/60gr nos partions. It will get the job done, even on less than desireable angles. It took a very angled shot on a mature animal before I even found a bullet to examine for performance.

It really doesn't take much to let the air out of a Tn whitetail. I have hunted for the past several years with a 5.6x50AI which is very close to your 22-250. I have been very pleased with both the Nos 60gr Partition and the Speer 55gr Bonded Bear Claw. For whatever reason, Speer discontinued this bullet, but I bought enough of them to last the rest of my life, which for deer shouldn't be all that many. Go for neck/head shots and avoid the body mass and you should be able to go where the deer was standing when you shot and look down. That's been my experience. I've not lost a deer since taking that approach and using those bullets.

Alf,
If I can't get these 75g Scirroco bullets to shoot, I will go back to the 60g Nosler Partition. The idea in the first place was to have a light recoiling rifle for my young boys to shoot deer with so they won't develop back habbits from the recoil. My oldest son, then 9 years old, shot a 200 pound 10 point with a 22-250 loaded with 60g Partitions. Shot through the chest, the buck reared up and fell backward- dead. I could not believe the damage and hydrostatic shock caused by the high velosity round. The bullet mushroomed perfect, broke ribs on both sides and rested under the skin of the shoulder on the far side. He has shot 4 does since, 3 fell right there and never moved, one ran about 20 yards and piled up. I would not take a .224 on a trophy Western deer or Canadian deer hunt, but I am sure not afraid of using them on any deer we have in NC. Samuel Hall

Two thoughts, lighter bullets(55-60gr) for slower barrels(12-14 twist) and heavier bullets 70-90 grain) for faster twist (7.75- 8.5).

I shot a moose with an 53 grain Barnes X bullet from and AR-15 and he dropped in his tracks. I have a friend who shot a moose with a 22-250 and that moose also dropped in its tracks.

I have witnessed hundreds of whitetails fall to the 22-250 and 220 Swift. They too dropped in their tracks.

At the age of 15 I shot 14 whitetails on 14 Saturdays in a row with a model 39 marlin 22 long rifle, non ran more than 100 yards and all were recovered.

I personally don't hunt deer or other big game with a 22 rimfire or centerfire because I don't have to or desire to. I personally think deer and larger game should be hunted with a .243 or larger caliber.

Ironically our military hunts people with a .223 and does it really effectively.

I'm not sure if they are still on the market but I have used a 55gr Trophy Bonded Bearclaw in a 22-250 in the past. It worked well but I now hunt with a 260.

63 gr Sierra over AR COMP works wonders in my AR for culling deer. Took a mature buck this year with one behind the shoulder. He went 50 yds after I made the 200 yd shot. That being said, I wouldn't shoot any further and expect good results.

60gr sierra hollow points out of my 222 does the trick out to about 125yds.
With any small caliber bullet shot placement is key.
