195g Berger hybrid .284 caliber

Will they work in a 1:8.5 twist barrel @ 2900 FPS?

Here's a link to Berger's calculator. Enter the appropriate data from Bryan's post and the drawing above, then enter your environmental data. A stability factor above 1.5 is optimal but anything above 1.4 will work fine. [br]
http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/ [br]
Attached is a small spreadsheet that implements Miller's twist rule with Bryan's stability criteria. Enter the appropriate data in the cells. If stability is below 1.4, the result cell will be red. If 1.4 or above but below 1.5, yellow. A result of 1.5 or greater will be green. [br]
Also attached is a reference chart to estimate barometric pressure at altitude. It assumes 29.92 at sea level. This is not too precise but will provide some guidance for altitude effects on stability.

Hi Steve Blair,
Thanks for the info.

Looks like Danny pulled the post. Top secret Team Berger test stuff ;)

If that thing lives up to it's potential, it will be the bullet to beat at 1000 yards.

Was there not a post from Dan Biggs he was shooting a match this weekend with these?

This coming weekend. I pulled it. I'm thinking that it's best if I just report the results directly to Eric and Team Berger, and let any formal announcements come from Eric or Bryan.

with the "slickest bullet on the planet " quote I was hoping for at least .820 to rival the 338 300 OTM but that is pretty good for 7mm,,,

7mm/338 LM Improved would be a lazer

So realistically what calipers are you guys thinking for this bullet? I would be interested in building a long range tactical type rig (will be shot with a brake attach suppressor) not a fclass rig.

I will give them a shot in a 7/270wsm. Just got my reamer print approved from some dummy rounds I sent to JGS. Looks like .230 of FB. With the 180vld.

I made the rounds to work in a defiance XM action. This particular chambering will be on a Pierce Ti long action. Some flexibility!

Personally, I'd buy Mitutoyo. They aren't any more accurate that the cheap ones in real-world terms, but they are darn nice. ;D

Now, cartridges - I've been playing with QL and they will work in a straight 284 or anything larger. For tactical work or hunting, you'll need more velocity to help overcome range estimation errors. a 7 WSM might be a really good choice depending on how long you can seat and still make it into the magazine. At that, the 195 looks to be long enough that you'll want a long action rifle...

LOL damn auto correct. Calibers
I don't know about calibers but the cartridge or case I would try would be a 7 SAUM. I believe it has enough to drive it accurately. If a bit short in capacity the 7 WSM would fit the bill. In 1000 yard BR the 7 WSM just wasn't accurate enough but you could get good velocity. Maybe the extra bullet weight over the 180 will make that case work. Matt

Just chambered my 7rsaum with an 8.5tw, building a 7mm/270WSM in an 8tw, with a throat set about right for this bullet. We are all just waiting patiently for word from the Berger guys when they might be out. There are in the hands of some of the field testers now, so hopefully if it performs up to their high standards, we should be seeing them before the end of the year.

The 7mm 195 grain Berger Hybrid is not a myth…. it has been tested by Team Berger members, but it is very IMPORTANT to remember these bullets are designed for hunting and made with a thinner jackets than Berger’s normal target bullets. A thicker jacket version for target shooting may come to market later.
I did testing at a 4,000 foot altitude in 80 degree temperatures using my 1-9 twist 7-270 WSM at speeds up to 2880 fps. The Hunting 195’s grouped at least as good as my normal Berger 180 Hybrids. I shot groups at both 100 yards and 1,000 yards. Groups while working up loads at 100 were all sub ¼ moa and the averages for the last 10 groups (50 shots) at 1,000 had an ES of 5.513" with a vertical of 4.251" under very poor mirage conditions. These are shooting as well or better than my 180 hybrids.

Two other Team members have done testing also with extremely good results. I will attach two electronic target system screen shots. One shot with a 1-9 twist barrel and another from a 1-8.25”. These were shot at 1,000 foot altitude. The third team member was shooting at 611 feet altitude with 1-8.5” twists. Both are very happy with the results.

Remember these are thin jacket bullets! Not recommended for target shooting.

What kind of velocity drop are you seeing going from the 180 to the 195? Hopefully we'll see similar on game performance to the 215 Hybrid which has been epic!!
