Just Whining about Getting Old!

At 84 my 3 favorite songs are "Young At Heart", "Try A Little Kindness" and "Today". I sing a few bars every morning. ATTITUDE COUNTS big time. I have had a very full, productive and enjoyable life. Only one wife, for 56 1/2 years, the best thing that ever happened for me. I've cycled thru many wonderful activities cooking, hunting, shooting, water fowling, building boats and furniture, cowboying, ranching and packing in the mountains of 3 states. I'm not a 'watcher' I was a 'doer'. I worked as a surveyor/construction engineer, on roads, bridges, and big buildings. Many varied enjoyable experiences. So I have lots of 'bragging rights' but really the important thing is I have a pocketful of wonderful memories of experiences with many people. The people were the best part. I have always tried to "put people first". Now my abilities have changed, an auto-immune condition (IgG4) is affecting my energy. When I must give something up, I add a new "something". The money I receive for my tools and 'toy's will go to a scholarship fund, it maybe limited but it will help someone. As I said, I have a pocketful of memories, not a pocketful of wishes.

If you have your health you have everything, so it is said. At 80 i am in pretty bad shape, no golden years. Congestive heart failure and other things. I am not going to elaborate or complain about those other things. There is always someone worse off. The one thing I hated to give up the most is hunting, There are people in my local hospital dying right now. This thing called old age sorta sneaks up on you, and you wonder how it got here so fast. But I have outlived my father and a whole lot of other people which I knew well. But I shall never outlive my mother. She died at the age of 105 on July 20, 2020 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. But I can still get around, with the help of a cane, depending on where I walk. And I can drive and do some grocery shopping which some folks cannot do. That handicap placard that you hang from your rear view mirror sure is a help if a space is available. If so, you don’t have to walk so far to get into the grocery store. I was hoping to get out to my gun club and shoot some small bore rifle this Spring. 50 yards. We shall see.

I have a feeder and game camera set up behind my house. When I walk by, it takes a pic. When I check the them, I say "Who the heck is that old man back there?" Someone messing with my feeder? Then I realize it's me. Good grief.
Ive got a pic from 25 years ago, when deer cameras used film… theres a world of difference in that one and the ones taken every other day nowadays.

I hate to even cut my hair much; seems I have an increasing shade of grey when it grows out. Shaving the beard off every few weeks, which I do, has the same effect.

On the plus side, a fresh haircut and shave makes me look younger… I don’t automatically get the senior discount, I have to ask for it.

I'm only 66 and just getting over my most recent ailments, 12 months of rehabilitation after both shoulders having surgery with the left being a complete reversal replacement. My left hip is next. I'm like everyone else mostly, tendons have snapped just simply from being over used in life. Broke legs, arms, wrist, hip, back. I remember laughing at my FIL years back, he's gone now. He simply said, " just keep breathing "... he was right. I'm turning the corner and reclaiming those last 12 months. I told my Dr. the hip can wait a little while.

Changed oil and greased the chassis on the 04 Sub today. Getting down and then back up several times is NOT my favorite thing.
Rt knee replaced and the left needing to be done makes for a painful time even with foam padding.
I just refuse taking vehicles to a shop as long as I'm able too, painful or not.

The last time I bought beer, I was asked my age (84). I didn't know I looked so young. I said "I'm headed up the to the university to pick up some chicks". So you see the 'glass is always half full', and sometimes, just maybe, with good whiskey!!

I'm in that club now.
My oldest wish dates back to summer of 1959. I rode my pony to the library in town and tied him to one of the hitching posts behind the building. Those posts dated back to the pre-Depression days when the building was built (like 1911 or '12). They had a stereograph inside, that's how old it was. And lots of books on hunting, mostly Africa. At going on ten I would plan my hunt in what is now Zimbabwe for Cape Buffalo.
Then puberty arrived, followed by the Vietnam War. After that, I didn't care to hunt for a couple years. Somehow, time got in the way, and then went by.
But, that dream never quite died. Then my wife told me to either quit talking (whining) about it or go.
So, I went in late Fall of 2008. I got a nice Buffalo, and then, two years later again; to RSA, and two years later a third trip. I have a last one in mind, if the body heals enough to let me walk that far again...

79th birthday and 60th wedding anniversary coming up in June. Can still do most of the things I used to do just at a slower pace. Getting up from a tight slug up prone position takes a little pre-planning regarding the shooting stool position. Still have a couple Norton Motorcycles to ride this summer, the 750 is pretty much ready the 850 ate a lobe on the cam so it is "iffy".

Keep moving forward and thankful for every day I wake up.

I will be 69 this year. Man, I hate looking at myself in the mirror. I walked 3-4 miles with my wife every morning whenever she can. She is 2 years older than me and has all kind of health issues. I ride my bicycle every chance I get. I'm still able to lift my 45 lbs ELR rifle but it seems like it's getting heavier each time. Hunting is probably over for me unless I get drawn on one of those hunt of a lifetime. I'm taking medication for cholesterol, high blood pressure and gout. Lost hearing from one ear due surgery to removed a rare tumor deep inside my head. Other than that, I don't really have nothing else to whine about.

A 10 min mile is darn good for a 72 yr old. I used to run, but looking at a knee Replacement soon. Regards.
I can still do a 10 minute mile at age 55, in my truck. I just had my lumbar spine fused this past Monday. So I’m still in the hurting like hell stage. In 4 weeks I have to get my left knee scoped and repaired again. But in a few days maybe I will feel up to some reloading. God Bless us all.
