Just Whining about Getting Old!

Rapidly approaching 83 and watching friends die off more times than I ever thought I would.
Still reloading and shooting every week and wondering when my accuracy will begin to wane.
But, even with the aches and pains that come with age, I still love shooting tight groups with my target rifles, although I have noticed that I am more effected by recoil now with the calibers that I used to think were pussycats.
At 82, I shot the smallest 5-round group I have ever shot at 100 yards. Did it with my Savage 12 FV .223 with a MDT LSS stock and Shilen 1:7 twist 416R SS 26-inch barrel target rifle - 0.021 inches (0.02 MOA) with an 80 grain Hornady ELD-M #22831. There are still things to accomplish, no matter how old you are.

Every morning I thank God for being able to start another day.

A 10 min mile is darn good for a 72 yr old. I used to run, but looking at a knee Replacement soon. Regards.
thats an above average score on every fitness calculator that I know of! As a benchmark, if you attend Paul Howe's urban defense course they want you to be able to cover 2 miles in 20 minutes or less. I don't think that includes a rifle or anything else. So, ya gotta boogie to make that time!

It's bad enough getting old (77) but on top of that, right now, I'm damned sick! I can't believe I haven't coughed up a lung, I look like I have tea bags stuck under my eyes, my throat glows stop-light red, and I've about wiped my nose off my face. When I was plodding/shuffling up from the shop, I was getting the trailer ready for a 2 week camping trip. The plan was to pick up my 82 year old aunt and go down to Nevada and go camping and rock picking with my uncle, who is my age. Recognizing that my aunt might have her life expectancy drastically reduced by being in close proximity to me, we've had to call it off. I'm hoping my wife doesn't get as sick. She has complained about having to wear earmuffs to deal with the whining. Not a sympathetic woman. WH

I am rv'ing down in Arizona for the winter. I have a 10x10ft tent set up behind my camper which has my shooting bench and all tools for reloading etc. The other day I was zipped up inside it working away and I heard a bunch of women gather up in the shade of a tree by my tent. They were there for a few hours yacking away telling stories and laughing like a bunch of teens. Finally I couldnt stand it anymore and had to unzip and peek around the corner to match voices to my imaginary 'chicks'. I was shocked to see a bunch of old white haired broads no younger than 70! lol. Moral of the story: After 65 get rid of all mirrors and you are as young as you feel!

VERY IMPORTANT about ten years ago I was walking about 3.5 miles a day. I was really kicking ass. I had high quality walking shoes. I made a huge mistake in not getting a new pair every 6-8 months. I thought that was bs plan by big business to get my money. Joke is on me. I got a stress fracture in my outside metatarsal. Foot problems ever since. It has severely knocked down my health. Take care of your feet, and if you are walking or running for exercise GET FRESH SHOES!

I need to add 3.5 miles, for me, was kicking ass!

I'm 74, have had more surgeries than I can count on both hands twice. I haven't learned that at my age you need to stop doing projects around the house, I still do or try to do everything I think I can. My bones let me know I over did it, I don't hurt for a few hours I hurt for a week or more.
I never worked an easy job, always lifting or pulling things heavier than me, now I don't even want to attempt to do it. With this replacement shoulder I can't do anything up over my head, and my fused lumbar tells me not to lift anything heavy.
When I was working, I was up, dressed and on the engine in seconds, now it takes minutes just to get in the right position to get up. Nobody ever said older age was going to be easy, but at least I'm still here to bitch about it.

72 here and I can definitely confirm about the feet. Pounded mine out of shape doing jump kicks in my Tae Quon Do classes. Getting 300 lbs in the air and then landing on bare feet took its toll. Add an injured knee into the equation and getting around is a lot tougher than it was 10 years ago.
Had my game down pretty well (finally!!) and though about the tour also, but don't think I could stand all the walking the course. Give me a cart and I could play well. Make me walk and after 9 holes I was done!!
Heck, I have a hard time getting on the tractor nowadays. Maybe upcoming knee surgery will help.

Getting old and having memories is I guess what it is all about. In 1968 my Dad, his friend, myself and my brother built a hunting camp 70 miles in the middle of nowhere. Today all those that hunted there except myself are gone. Sometimes when I am alone at the camp, I will say their names out loud hoping that they can somehow hear me and know that they will not be forgotten as long as I'm alive.
^^^^ This ^^^

Very cool, my guide tells me that if I give a special gift to a friend you’ll always recognize them at your fire.

When I was young if I knew I was going to live this long I would like to think I would have taken better care of myself. But when I look back I probably would not do anything different! I had a great time, loved my work, made lots of money, spent lots of money! Those long hours put me on disability at a young age and have been paying for it ever since. Live life to the fullest because you never know when it will be taken from you! Do what you can when you can because one day you may wake from an operation to be told you can't do these things anymore unless you want to live the rest of your life in a wheelchair.
