Remington 700 build, need guidance.

I’ve got a couple of them that Chad did. They’re top notch no doubt. I guess I don’t know what tier mine are, I just assumed my threads were opened up. Shows what I know.

The Tier 2 action work that LRI does leaves the orginial threads (they just chase them to clean them up) so that you can use Remage barrels.

I have Rem 700s and custom actions. After building one (1) custom rifle off of a Rem 700, I decided money was better spent on custom actions. I still however have Rem 700s. As the barrels wear out, my approach is to rebarrel with a remage barrel. They can be had considerably cheaper than a 'smith chambering a shouldered barrel and do shoot well. I do not worry about truing, bushing, timing and keep the Rem actions as they were from the factory. These will do all you want for a hunting rifle and keeps the price reasonable.

If you don't have a Rem 700 already on hand, it makes no sense to go that route. Bighorn, Defiance, Stiller, Kauger with a prefit barrel is where I'd look. With the cost of rifle components today, nothing is inexpensive.

Or got overwhelmed and scared off from all the comments, LOL
Yes, he was/is maybe looking for something 'basic'. A Shilen or Douglas barrel, Timney trigger, a H-S Precision stock, while using a SA 700 found at 'best price'. Wasn't planning a full 'true job' with bushed firing pin, side bolt release, and timed bolt handle. Just a 'basic' varmint rig to take to the field. Maybe, that was/is all he's looking for. Don't know, as he seems to have 'bailed'.......

This will be a coyote and varmint shooter, so want to keep the cost down on my first one.

Everyone sees keep cost down but misses the bold part above. If he spends a little more on this one he won’t have to go through it all again and spend even more later. He can get an inexpensive custom action and then change barrels out at home to use for varmints or to use for hunting deer or to shoot some matches or to do anything else with that good base. It’s about the long game. Not saving a couple hundred, literally what he may save, now to spend more later.

The conundrum is that he will spend more on a Remington 700 build, even using a factory receiver, than he would simply buying a Bergara or Tikka rifle that will shoot just as well and do the job he wants. Granted there are none in the 22Creedmoor caliber he has specified, but a 22-250 would do just as well for the intended purpose of hunting predators and varmints.

There are so many good rifles in the 1800-2200 range that I can’t fathom building a barrel nut job in a cheap stock to save a couple hundred.

I stand by a budget build done correctly is in the $3000 range. Again, that’s the assembly of cheaper parts to reach the same level of accuracy.

A half moa gun (very mediocre by today’s standards) could probably be built for half of that…. But then why not buy a tikka?

A tikka would do him just fine.no recoil lug to grind.no firing pin hole to bush.no after market side bolt release.no box mag conversion or aftermarket trigger.just swap the current spring for a lighter one.screw a matchgrade barrel on and shoot it.ive been down the R700 route quite a few times.alot of work and expense and it's still a R700 when you come to sell it.tikkas are good.especially the M55s.

OK, let me start off by saying I'm an AR guy and have pieced together quite a few. I'm venturing into putting my first bolt gun together. I have the general knowledge on how to, but may still have questions. Wanting to do a 22 Creedmoor in a 700 action for my first. Give me guidance on where to start. Suggestions on where to find a used action and bolt? I have a barrel picked out so I'm good there. This will be a coyote and varmint shooter, so want to keep the cost down on my first one.
I have several 700s I’ve built that do very well. I did true the actions, time ignition etc…. I agree with others that if the extra $500 is not an issue, go with one of the clones. Kelbly, Mac, Kuagar etc…. I have a couple in Boyd’s laminated stocks I use for prairie dogs. With a little work adding pullers and bedding, they work just fine and are dirt cheap. I think it was called the Varmint pro but the name may have changed.
