First build question - Remington Truing

I built a semi custom gun on a savage action years ago. Didn't have funds to true and tune the action so I just simply bought the same contour shilen barrel and installed it myself. Used a spent cartridge as a go, no go gauge and it worked fine. That free floating savage bolt head made the job a bit easier than a Remington bolt. Put an after market trigger on it and completed the gun. The end result was a gun that shot .3 - .5 consistently. Certainly there is alot to be said for trueing and lapping actions/bolts but in this case, it wasn't necessary. At least for my acceptance of accuracy. It would depend on level of accuracy and use of the gun to determine if that extra work would be needed. Many people shooting game at reasonable ranges wouldn't need to add the extra expense. I suspect if the accuracy wasn't acceptable, a guy could pull the barrel and send it and the action off to get trued and tuned. To some folks, money is a determining factor in the equation.

How much would you take for your 50 year old Remington?
I wouldn't sell it. That's part of why I'm looking to work with it. It was my first rifle given to me from my father...but it never gets used in its current form. Keeping the action is what's important to me. I wouldn't take 750 for it if offered tomorrow. Really just want to get it out of the safe and into the field with a new life

Why true it at all!?

Screw on a custom pipe and shoot it...

I want to squeeze every bit of accuracy out of it that I can. Sure, the gopher doesn't know the difference but when I have it at the bench if I can shrink a .5 to a .3. Why not? Granted a lot will depend on me and my loads as well but every little bit helps right!

Go for it. You'll learn alot from doing it. You may come to realize that all the work, time and expense IS worth the result. On the other hand, you may realize buying a complete action was much easier even if it is a bit more expensive.

It is yours to do what you want and I can understand. Strictly from an economic standpoint, willingness to sell at all, and considering resale value, I still feel it's cut and dry. Obviously, a couple of key elements to that formula are missing in your case. Build as you like it and enjoy it.
