Remington 700 build, need guidance.

For an inexpensive coyote killer, I dont see anything wrong with a 700 action. I would add a ground parallel lug, have the firing pin bushed and knob threaded. A tuned XMP trigger works. CBI "remage" barrel. Boyds or Stocky's stock.

I've managed to get a few pretty cheap by finding a complete gun marked down. I've also seen some of the Mack Bros actions used for a good deal.

You will dump more money into a 700 action trying to make it right versus just buying one of the more inexpensive customs now and having it right to begin with. It’s not the 90s anymore.
Sometimes you can find a deal that the work has already been done !

And you still have a 700 that you have to send off to get rebarreled or use a nut and stuck with one bolt face and a crappy resale value.

Buy what you like but I will never again buy a 700 action as they offer nothing in today’s market. Would never recommend anyone buy them. I only have one left and it’s for sentimental value as it was my original from 1993 and on its 9th .308 barrel.

You’d be a little crazy not to get a Mack bros action. Origin is a sane choice also. They’re about 950 now though.

Avoid barrel nuts. They work just fine but they’re never not going to look awful.

For a stock, on the budget side of things, I’d look at AG Composites and MC3. Grayboe has some decent ones too. You need to order the stock to fit your exact barrel profile and then have a smith cut you a barrel with the appropriate length shank and bed the action.

Just don’t overdress the gun or make it too heavy. It’s a hunting rifle.

To do a “budget” build correctly, you’re still going to land somewhere around $3,000. My personal builds are running around $4400 without optics. Take into account I use a $1050 stock and a $400 trigger and you’re already a lot closer to $3,000 by going budget in those areas.

I have a very nice LRI customized Remington 700 short action, 308 bolt face, It has LRI custom Tier 2 action trueing, bolt fluting, side bolt release, and LRI twin pin recoil lug, ceracoated in stainless for $600. A steal for all of the work done to it. Can be verified through LRI.
Your threads, are they not opened up during the truing process? Will they still accept a prefit?

15 years ago a worked over Remington

Now, starting from scratch, no way.

Do not do it, you’re in a position these days that it’s silly.

Mac Bros.

With all due respect, I totally disagree with this. $3000 for a budget build hunting rifle is way high in my opinion. But my opinion isn't worth much these days.

Can pick this up for $950, but a KRG Bravo for $350 and a 22 Creed barrel for about $600 and you are at $1800 for a nice rifle.

Break down the build list. “Budget”, is up to the individual for sure.
My last 700 action I paid $400 nib on secondary market. RemAge barrel with nut will be around $450. Tuned XMP trigger $40-$60, factory take off stock $20-$100, scope base $40, bottom metal ~$200, hunting scope ~$300+. So for about $1500 you can build one up.

The last complete 700 I bought was an old XTC gun in 6x250. 26" heavy Palma stainless barrel, jewell trigger, McMillan stock with 3-way butt plate, HS Precision dbm, no sights, sako style extractor. Paid $495 before tax and dros. It also sat on the consignment rack for over 6 years before I bought it, likely because of the chambering.

“Correctly” is the operative word.

You’ve got to outperform Tikka through Seekins to even begin to justify building.

Ultimately it ain’t my money.

I just wish someone would have grabbed me by the ear and made me buy exactly what I wanted in the first place whether it’s rifles or reloading tools, you name it.

Because I always end up there anyway and I’m either selling for half of what I got in it or it’s collecting dust.

I’d be where I’m at now with 5 rifles that I shoot. Skipped the savage and Remington phase. And it’d been cheaper.

You know that you’re gonna end up there. Fast forward to the finish line.

Or maybe I need professional help.

Either way get a MacBro, criterion, decent chassis. Minimal but more than plenty.

OK, let me start off by saying I'm an AR guy and have pieced together quite a few. I'm venturing into putting my first bolt gun together. I have the general knowledge on how to, but may still have questions. Wanting to do a 22 Creedmoor in a 700 action for my first. Give me guidance on where to start. Suggestions on where to find a used action and bolt? I have a barrel picked out so I'm good there. This will be a coyote and varmint shooter, so want to keep the cost down on my first one.
Contact Harren's customs, 3018318068. He may have an action.

The action will take a factory barrel per LRI Tier 2 work performed . It does not have to take a particular barrel. I will get some pics of it and get it posted in the classifieds. It will be a steal for a LRI Remington. Nothing wrong with the customs, some very good prices on the customs on the market. All I am saying, if this work was not already done to the action I have, I agree completely that the custom would be the way to go. But what I will post it for, it would be crazy to pass on it, but that is completely up to who ever would decide on it.

I’ve got a couple of them that Chad did. They’re top notch no doubt. I guess I don’t know what tier mine are, I just assumed my threads were opened up. Shows what I know.
