Hunting range limit

Those ethical hunting videos are a love hate with me. One, there is lots of area on a broadside shot that is lethal and provide clean ethical kills besides a heart shot. Two, I have seen animals shot text book perfectly that absolutely refuse to die in a timely ethical manner. That part of it you just can't control and you can't do it at any range. I understand the premise of the videos and what they are trying to show, I just don't like implying they are unethical if they didn't hit the red circle when 9 out of 10 shots they show would result in a clean ethical harvest out in the real world.

I’m not a fan of most branches, but I do like game laws.

I know what you mean though. We have enough rules as it is.
So I live in Oregon State, which has vast quantities of public hunting and fishing lands. BLM, State/Federal Forests, huge wildlife refuges with hunting allowed -- and a state government that is comprised of liberal, anti-hunting, anti-gun, greenies who would love to end hunting completely.

Every law they pass seems to make things harder and more expensive for hunting and fishing. To acquire a big game tag in most of the state, requires "points" which are earned from unsuccessful draws. To have enough points to give you good enough odds to win the draw takes from 6 to 10 years unsuccessful draws in most of the good areas. This system has pretty much insured that 50 % of applicants have simply given up and quit hunting big game.

In Oregon, we live in fear of "new laws" and the real intentions of our law makers. We'll pass on any new ones. jd

I see Wyoming is discussing a range (distance) limit for hunting.
In part they're saying it takes the fair chase part out of the sport. I haven't seen any suggestions as to what distances they're looking at though.
Regardless of what side of the fence you're on in this, how could a distance limit be enforced in the field besides physically seeing the shot and measuring the distance.
Drones

Does anyone else get the oxymoron between "ethics" and "Law"? The former is internalized morality directing behavior. The latter is threat of punishment limiting behavior (maybe).

Typical of rulers to rule...and no wonder after a time they get hung from street lamps.

Somebody needs to inform their Dept...
There has been advancements in technology.
a 13 year old kid can get a 6.5 creed nowadays and bang steel at 1000 no problem.
What used to be ethical at 200 yds is now todays 1000 yd shots.
Great Glass, superior bullets, superior BC's compared to just 20 yrs ago.
Perhaps they need a demo or need to watch some 800-1000 yd kills on you tube.

Putting a limit on a hunters capability that he trained and worked for is also unfair
Taking a calculated shot at long range isn't exactly, EASY.

Idaho did something along those lines. They put a 17 lb limit on rifles. A lot of out of state hunters just started fluting barrels. A friend at F&G says there are a lot of 16 lb 12 ounce rifles out there these days.

What is the source of this info? Not that I don't believe you, I'd just like to read it for myself

Judging by how a good portion of the public completely or mostly ignores traffic laws, I'm thinking adding the rule is pointless. Besides, without seeing the shot it's not enforceable and they don't even enforce the laws we have now.

About the only place they could enforce it is from people posting videos about it...maybe that's the point of the law.

A number of TV hunting show hosts have gotten into legal trouble from video of, sometimes unintentional, game law violations.

A video was mentioned in the article.
Someone had posted a video on one on the forums (FB/X/) or another boasting about taking an animal at 1900 yds. and got the attention of the Wyomings DNR (or whatever Wyoming calls it). Then some ranches complained about it because of lost animals on their properties.

I would often take a small portable field target in the field (farms w/ permission) where I hunted and test myself to make a shot in the vitals under field conditions at varying distances under varying environmental conditions. I did this exercise for varmint hunting to learn my real-world capabilities. The results were sobering to say the least. Nevertheless, I learned a lot which lead to improving my field techniques and equipment which translated to better field performance.

Some years ago I did that during the off season with some hunting pistols (Contenders) from treestands/
climbers. Also found it sobering and lead to improvement.

They may be looking at something like BC did, outlaw the scopes that did everything but wipe your butt. Been a couple of yrs since I read it, believe it was about self-contained rangefinding & conditions & solutions electronics in the scope being allowed, talking about the stuff I'd probably call military sniping stuff, kind of stuff that is many thousands of dollars and up.

As far as I m concerned, anything you do to a coyote is fine by me. Having said that I try and kill everything I shoot at with one shot and end it quickly. And overkill is underrated, I have shot a lot of Fox with a 45/70 with 300. Grain HP over 60 grains of H-4198.
