I want speed...

I think you're over doing it with a 6-284. I used one for 1000 BR and LR PDs back in early 2000's with an 8T. Barrel lasted less than 1000 rounds.

I cut off the entire chamber and tried a 6XC with 87 VMax's for LR PDs....much better. 87s still tore PDs apart @ 800-900 yards.

If I did it again today I'd use a 6BR.....or a 6GT if I wanted a little more speed. I'd still opt for the 8T to be able to shoot 105s.

Speed? I enjoy speed with rifles, especially hunting rifles, it takes a long time to burn through 500-600 hunting varmints like yotes and the such. Barrels are replaceable. My latest speed demons are a 22-6.5 PRC and a 22x47, both are fast, both are accurate and both put a smile on my face. That’s the point isn’t it? Have fun, shoot what you enjoy? I have plenty of standard cartridges that will give me 1500-3000 rounds but those overbore fast cartridges are a lot fun!

I’ve been there. Most 6-284’s don’t make it past 800 rounds.
I did a 25/06 AI 40 degree. 28” Palma match.
85gr BT 3,990. I tried but couldn’t break 4k
120’s at 3,450. It’s fun. I get it.
Then. Wait. I built my first 6XC 26” barrel.
105 VLD’s at 3,150 FPS. Accuracy like a 6BR. Good barrel life. 2-2,500 rounds. No recoil in a 10.5 lbs Rifle. 500 yards is a give me chip shot. Hits out to 1,200 yards. It so easy. I felt like hun. I should’ve done this a long time ago. Most impressive is how hard it hits. You would swear it was a 7 mag. Im just saying if you ever tried it. You would be ruined. Hit it with the range finder. Dial it. Touch the trigger and whack. It’s so easy. No guess work. No misses. I wish I had one 30 years ago.

@Frankr I honestly feel the same way about the 6 BR/BRA.

I remember showing up at antelope camp with a dainty little 9 pound BRA and 105 Hybrids. They looked at me like I was insane. We spotted a sure enough booner at 701 yards, and about the time they suggested a plan for getting closer, I sent one and felled him like a pine.

Fast is fine. Accuracy is final…. Or whatever he said. :)

I was with a guy with a 300 RUM. He was missing. He said let me see that thing. Whitetail doe 650 yards. I gave him the dial. She was moving. A little. He shot. She went down got back up and ran off. I was like O no I will never hear the end of this. We went over, I found her about a 100 yards away. Gut shot. Like I can’t shoot it for you. I shot a pile of em one and done.
Critters big and small. No discrimination.
I love how hard the wack is on a steel plate at 500 yards. IMG_0293.jpeg

I'll stand my ground on the 6-284. 50 rounds to get a sub-1/4moa load at 100 yards. In my rotation, it'll get 200-250 rounds in a year. Four hot rod rifles, and the trusty 223 for close range work. I will rotate the battery. I may even leave the 223 at home and take my custom Borchardt 25-35 for the close stuff. It groups a bit under an inch at 100, and about 2 1/2" at 300. I am very blessed.

My lovely bride bought me a Vortex Impact 4000 for a late Christmas present. I have reached Nirvana!

Go big or go home! :)
I'm thinking about 800-1'000 rds before a new barrel... Seriously overbore but, HEY!
"Speed cost Money... HOW Fast do you want to go?"

No the the 6/284 is a hoot.
I also had a really nice weatherby 240 WM. It was a really nice Rifle. Shot well but was a 10 twist. . I love that 240 WM. It’s just so cool looking. I sold it due to the 10 twist. I have considered many many times building one in a 8 twist throated properly for a 105.
It’s just you know to do it right it’s a bundle. I talked to weatherby about them offering one with a 8 twist. They said NO! They said custom shop. The price was they didn’t want to do it. I still have brass. Yea I like the 240 mag.

I just popped onto Weatherby's website and they are saying they are 1-7.5 now. It was one of them backcountry Rifles. It was really nice and shot well. A 240 in 1-7.5 is interesting. It’s very cool.

Yea a 240 WM in a 1-7.5 twist. I will have to have one. Thanks to this thread, I haven’t thought about it in some years. Kind of gave up on the idea. All I can say about Weatherby mags is most people either hated or loved them. Me I was neutral. But I can tell you the few I played with, that Roy Weatherby knew what he was doing.
240 WM 95 VLD on left. It’s so cool.
6XC 105 VLD on right. Works as advertised .

Speed sells and I'm buying!
I'm not loading varmint bullets in my 240 wby right now but I'm shooting the Barnes 80 gr TTSX @ 3725 fps
Bang flop!
The 70 - 75 gr loads pushed faster make stuff explode...
Krieger makes new barrels every day :)
Curious what powder you like with the 70- 80 gr bullets? I ve had my 240 for about 15 years but have only used imr 4350 and imr 4831 in it with limited testing. I am having a hard time finding brass as well.

The 70-75 grain varmint bullets shot good for me with IMR 4350 & H4831. That was out of my old barrel. Shooting the 7.5 twist Krieger
& the 80 grain TTSX I’m using RL22, also use that for the 95 - 105 loads.
When the 240 brass comes available, buy a bunch.
