6mmBR load development questions

Hi guys,I have some questions regarding 87grain V-Max's out of my 6BR.I am currently shooting 105 A-Max's @ 2662f.p.s and accuracy is out standing I was thinking of dropping down to the 87grain because I want to get every bit of velocity I can I only use this gun for woodchucks and It works great I have kills out to 750 yards. I was reading somewhere that vit-n133 would give me good velocity with a 24 inch barrel and 87 grain pills.will that work or Is there another avenue I should peruse.I really hate to re barrel the gun with a longer length simple reason Is I have a Hart barrel that shoots light's out and has diamond flutes ,muzzle break and a custom snake skin finish there is almost 500 bucks in the barrel before It is even chambered. The reason that I am seeking more speed I have been shooting at a little longer distances and I got a few crawl offs I don't really like that I like a clean one shot kill.Any suggestions would help. Thanks...

Eddywitay,

I run 30.5 gr. of Varget, CCI-450 w/87 V-max in my 6BR. Speed is about 2825 from a 24" barrel. Have gotten explosive expansion at 742 yds. even on a 3# Rockchuck. Will agg. .250 or better if the driver is on. Hope this helps. ;D

Regards, Paul

I think n 133 maybe a little fast. You can try it but n135, and varget are better. Here is some load data: http://varmintsforfun.com/uploads/2/7/1/9/2719887/6_mm_br_load_data.xls

I use 30.5 grains of 8208 XBR behind the *Berger* 87 gr VLD Hunting. I haven't used it with the VMAX, so your milage may vary.

The XBR meters much better than Varget. It's easy to get to 100% case fill.

Are you getting that kind of case fill with 30.5 gr of 8208? --Mike

Myself....I keep going back to Varget in my 6BR (14 twist). I shot some loads: 32gr of XBR8208 behind 70gr Sierra's @ 600 yards this week and found that although I did well with them it seemed that the pressure was a bit much, bolt action was tight as compared with 33 gr of Varget that I normally shoot. The Varget gives me a full case load - (normal 100-200 yard bullet is a 67 gr Bib or a 68 gr Berger.) I keep trying other powders but Varget seems to be where it's where it's at - good velocity and accuracy without the hard bolt lift pressure indications.

While the 87 V-Max performs nicely with half a dozen powders in my 6BR (10 Twist) the Berger 87 VLD outdoes using Varget at 3000 f/s.

For those who may not be familiar, Berger now offers an 87gr VLD in its "hunting" series of bullets. This is part #24524.

Not a lot of folks know about that projectile as it does not appear in the "target" list. In this same general range, Berger makes an 88gr long-nose FB bullet (Varmint series), a 90gr Match Boattail (Target Series), and a 95gr Match VLD (Target series), and 95gr Hunting VLD (Hunting Series).

I havent used it in bullets this light in a 6BR, but Vihta Vouri N540 is a high energy powder which is giving people some good velocities. Can you get some N540 to try?

forum boss, anyone tested the 88gr varmint fb for accuracy at 100-200?i have 1-8 and looking for low #s @ 1-200! old school of thought was fb bullets to 300

yes I can get some n-540 I just want to get more speed out of my 24 inch barrel 2662 fps. with the 105 a-max is a little slow for my chuck shooting needs I will try n-135 also

With the Berger 88FB in my ladder test 31.7 grs of Varget shot .286
The 87 VLD's with 32.2 grs Varget shot mid 2's. All Lapua brass, 450's, soft seated out of a 10-t 28"
The 87's seems to fly better hot. But that was just my gun!

Doc Gordon,
I use the berger 88, in a 6br bench rest pistol 1/9 twist, it quite often shoots in the low 3's total group size at 200 yds. I have done this with VV-135,RL15,and Norma 203B. Another good bullet for me has been the 95 Sierra MK.

When using 105gr or 107gr bullets Varget is the most accurate powder in my 6mmbr,but when shooting both 87gr V-max and 85gr HPBT N140 is far and away the most accurate powder.I also found N133 to be just a little too fast burning for the above bullets.
