So Cal Fires!!!

I get what your saying, but anyone in the insurance game knows the risks of thier business.
A GAMBLE if you will...
They collect $$$ from the masses in hopes of never having to pay out, knowing the money collected outweighs what they're paying out.
Sounds like a numbers game run by the Mafia, "legalized organized crime".

With 35 years in a body shop I've witnessed and financially felt thier numbers game.
It used to be we had field adjusters that wrote sheets to repair damaged vehicles, that burden has been placed on the shops and passed on to the technicians, yet shops and techs are not paid for, in fact the times shops/techs are paid to preform the same operations have gone down all while doing the insurance companies logistics.
Yeah insurance is a Fk'n racket, prove me wrong.
Well, insurance companies, with actuary involvement, predict their losses and adjust rates accordingly. Most think 10 to 14% underwriting profit is pretty good. And most states regulate admitted carriers and have to approve their rates.

Yah but you can't hardly do without!! Try going without on a BIG medical issue. Had no $$$$ going in and damn sure won't have any when they get thru with you. At least you're still alive?
Bc'z is right. Find a doctor who accepts cash only or hospitals that operate by charging cash for the services you need and you will see the difference in cost (yes, they exist). Doctors and hospitals milk the insurance companies and the insurance companies set the rate they pay the doctors. Then we pay the difference - we are the final victim.

We live in a world where we buy what we can't afford because we want instant gratification and we expect someone else to bail us out of a catastrophe.

Like a student loan? Jeff

You know, this isn't anything about insurance. This is purely politics. You think this is the first time there were Santa Ana winds? This phenomenon has existed forever. They've given CA tons of money to deal with this problem. They take the money, then spend it somewhere else. Now, Newsom is proposing "resistance" to the Federal gov't opposing everything being put forward.
If you look in the dictionary, this is the epitome of an insurrection. Just by saying what he's saying is indicative of promoting a conspiracy. He was the one that drove the insurance out of the state.
Laguna had the same problem as this area. They chose goats to keep brush in check for a lot less money than L.A. has wasted.
What you're seeing here isn't a fire disaster, it's criminal negligence. These people shouldn't be fired, they should be in sent to prison.
I've lived in CA all of my life, I hate what it has become.
East of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, it is a whole different State.

Don’t completely disagree. A racket, that’s required by law no less, always dicey.

What’s your fix?
Hold insurance companies accountable, they wrote the policies and charged the premiums, now they can back up thier roll of the dice. Isn't that what gambling is all about?

I don't carry medical insurance.
Obama care was the government stepping into the insurance racketeering game, demanding all Americans carry medical insurance or pay a fine.
Talk about extortion and racketeering!!
It was cheaper to pay the $1, 600 fine on my taxes than the $13,000 in premiums yearly.
Thats my roll of the dice, as I'm healthy, a bit outta shape and a bit broken, but healthy.

Not quite the reality. I live in with a responsible conservative set of values. I spend MY money within my limits and incur no debt. I ask for nothing from other people or my Government. A large and growing population in this country spend beyond thier limits, whine to the government and ask for “help” thru loan forgiveness or bankruptcy. The government covers the shortfall by raising taxes on the people that have money, like me.
Same with the banking, insurance and other businesses.

I thought it was a matter of not renewing policies, I hadn’t heard of them failing to honor the policy. Heck if I know. But I thought they were choosing not to roll the dice. I wouldn’t buy into that game, I know that.

I believe they pulled out of California, hence thier "UN"fair act, causing residents to pay astronomical prices for coverage

And then proceed to build the most densely populated county in the entire US
Just a point in fact. The most densely populated counties in the USA:
1. New York county ( aka, Manhattan)
2. Queens County
3. Kings County (aka Brooklyn)
4. Bronx County
These 4 counties plus one more make up the City of New York
Not politically better than that county in California, just an exercise in numbers.

The Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett visa Berkshire Hathaway owns several insurance companies, most if not all withdrew from California home policy circa 2022-2024, I believe wildfire risk was one of several reasons. If anyone knows what a good vs poor investment is he would qualify.

I wonder how much of the tax base has been erased.

I wonder how much additional tax load California will force on everyone in state not affected by the fires.

I wonder who’s going to do all that reconstruction work, as all of the skilled trades are understaffed.

I wonder where all those construction workers are going to stay.

I wonder how much more gridlock will occur.

I wonder how much more costly and time consuming it’ll be to build fresh with all the codes for new construction.

I wonder what sorts of materials shortages are about to occur nationwide.

I wonder how many that have lost everything will just up and leave.

I wonder if anyone in California government has wondered these things. Not really….

This may have been posted / discussed already. If so I will delete.
Mortgages are still due on burned / destroyed houses.
Property taxes will be decreased to include the damage.
The lots / properties, in effected area, is ~2/3 of the value of the homestead.. area is some of the most desirable land in U.S.. so, not much of a reduction..( ouch)

The story from my Marine grandson @ Camp Pendelton Cal.
Oregon sent fire fighting trucks & equipment to Cal.

Trucks & equipment got to San. Francisco. We're told that they could not be used in Cal. due to emission regulations. Wonder how many civilians know about that. ???

To me at least, a few successful friends, and on a larger scale, the Amish have taught me that a really good life can be had without a student loan - really good. So, no, I personally would not borrow the money I see people borrowing to go to college. The figures I hear are ridiculous. I paid for grad school out of pocket around the year 2000.

Colleges are also a scam, but in a different way than insurance companies.
