So Cal Fires!!!

Something was mentioned about a BUNCH of So Cal fire trucks being down for repairs and out of commission?? Can't use them if they're broke!!
Rumors brother, just Rumors..
Directly from Oregon state Fire Marshal.
What we should really focus on is MEN like @Mike T son who defied evac orders and defended his home and his neighbors home at his own personal risk.
If WE as Americans were just a bit more defiant and stood together, and quit pointing fingers this country would be better for it.
To much playing victim and shifting blame by local governments, it's about time Americans come together.

Yeah, that just didn't sound right and didn't make sense when I first heard it. After all, California has all kinds of out of state trucks traveling through it as well as visiting passenger cars. Keeping fire fighting teams away to dowse smoke producing fires would just be stupid!

Two completely different issues.

Due to budget cuts, one of the casualties was mechanics working for LAFD. Therefore equipment is not ready to roll.
Over 100 fire apparatus are out of service, the fire chief said. The budget cuts eliminated civilian positions such as mechanics, which “did and has and will continue to severely impact our ability to repair apparatus,” Crowley said.

The truck from Oregon made it to the fires. It was a large portion of locals that couldn’t get out of the yard.

Thanks for the clarification

Do you think there will be any coverage of the environmental damage(toxins)from thousands of solar panels, EV and EV chargers that burned up and the lithium, magnesium they contained mixing with topsoil. Dust will have the potential to be toxic, during cleanup and reconstruction.
Nope… inconvenient facts will be ignored…

Forum Boss: I have a close friend who work in waste management in Santa Barbara County. She says there is already an issue with disposal of worn/broken solar panels (this was BEFORE the fires). And she says discarded lithium batteries are causing regular fires in the bins of trash trucks.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they pushed to make it a Superfund site…. Taxpayers will foot the bill. Just an additional drop in the $36 Trillion dollar national debt bucket.

A lot of California has habitat that is fire based. In order for the vegetation to survive and grow it needs fire. Here in eastern NC it is the same thing. But due to restricting controlled burning and "smoke" management (no one likes smoke) every time a small fire starts the government put it out, even though at the time it may be beneficial. I feel sad for the people that lost everything, but for those that return and rebuild I have no mercy. It will happen again.

As a side note, I have a cottage near the ocean. I am forced to purchase federal flood insurance as long as I have a mortgage. My personal philosophy is that if I am stupid enough to build there and I lose it in a storm it is my fault. The taxpayers should not be burdened with using their tax money to subsidize my low interest loan to rebuild. So for areas that are prone to natural disasters there should not be any government subsidies to rebuild. If you want to rebuild then fine, but don't come crying to us when you lose your stuff a second time.

Yes a scam and damn money maker. My granddaughter is going for two semesters in Italy. It is way cheaper then Boise and she pays for everything. Food, rent. And it works for credits at Boise.

I worked with a young lady in NC on a volunteer trip to NC a couple of months ago who got her Masters in Italy. She didn't even have to learn Italian and it took way less time than it does in the US.

Something to think about. People in California, as also the rest of the country, are living on the verge of a civil war. These people living on the coast are the problem. Super liberal, super progressive, as long as it isn't their ox that's getting gored. I don't think there has been a fair election in California in 40 years. Maybe they will start thinking about the consequences of their choices. Those that sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind.
Our problem in California, IS and always WAS Los Angeles and San Francisco. Fair elections are a joke. At one time 144% of the registered voters, voted in LA county, didn't even raise an eyebrow.

Just because adding fuel to a fire or argument can be entertaining at times
All you guys saying people should have been clearing fuel around their house for decades. How many know that in California, there is a good chance you need local approval and a permit to remove and or maintain your own trees? Or that much of the natural vegetation is a protected species?

My uncle lived on the California side of Lake Tahoe and had been more or less illegally cutting trees on his property for years. At least twice in the time he lived there, when there were local fires, the forest service used his land as the staging area. The reason, it was the largest defendable space in the area. He figured having the fire crews camp out on the front lawn was pretty good insurance.

Living close to wilderness areas in California has its own special challenges.

When I lived there in the 80’s, the house was located within the boundaries of the national Forrest. Homeowners insurance was a joke. Call the agent, get your insurance. Within 2-3 years they would get around to an on-site inspection. Within 30 days came the non renewal notice. The non renewal instead of cancellation was critical. Non renewal meant you just called someone else and were back in the game. A cancelation due fire hazard meant a huge increase in premiums if you could even get insurance at all.

Having to change carriers every couple years was money in the pocket of your agent. Better commission for new policies than renewals. Everyone knew it was a shell game. The house has always won. Always will.

There actually is a very good chance of things changing this time. The more companies that pull out of the state, the higher the losses for those that remain, means less money to buy politicians. Maybe that’s the silver lining.

On the Gulf Coast, we get Hurricanes. Nature does not discriminate.
I South West California, they get wild fires and the occasional earth quake. Nature does not discriminate.

Neither one of these natural events would be of any consequence except for the fact that people happen to live there.

Several years back, we had Hurricane Ike hit the upper Gulf Coast. This was a huge devastating storm. Galveston looked like a war zone.

it’s now all rebuilt. Like it never happened. People choose to take the chance to live there and businesses choose set up shop there because it’s such a nice place to live and make money……..until.

The difference between Texas and California is California seems to have a Government that by their actions makes the natural hazards more devastating. The ill miss management of the forest and overgrowth of brush, and the non allocating of the funds needed to control these natural disasters in order to prevent huge looses.

But the voters keep electing these leaders. So, who is to blame?

I thought this was a pretty good read. About halfway there is discussion about the history of fire in California.

https://brownstone.org/articles/wildfires-and-the-hoary-hoax-of-a-burning-planet/

Fire has existed as a natural event in California since forever. Yet people choose to live there. Gavin Newsome is an idiot and to see him or hear him nauseates me, just like Biden and the cackler do.

PS: I really like to read posts by people who actually live there and who have successfully dealt with the problem. Like the fires, there is a lot of smoke in discussion of the fires among individuals and the news media.

PSS: This is great news I California.

Yes and my granddaughter is going back to finish her degree there. No BS classes are forced on them. And she said the food is crazy good compared to Boise. I hope she doesn`t come home a 400 pounder! Jeff
