Western North Carolina

The news organization are just getting up speed on the devastation in western NC. Here is a link to a Facebook page that a college kid runs. He is the go to guy for information about what's going there. The devastation can't be described.
If you find it in your heart donate whatever you can to a local charity in the affected counties. This is a long long term recovery effort.
Transylvania county has been in my heart since I got out of the Navy in 1970. That's where I'll be moving as soon as my house is finished. My charity of choice there is Sharing House. I'm sure there are others like it in the affected counties.

Thanks
Dave

Yes, this has been very understated! The damage is truly immense and the recovery very long. Probably the worst natural disaster in our nation's history. Just a fore warning...I started a thread a few days ago, just like this one. It was deleted by mods for being off topic even though a bunch of our friends and shooters are affected, hugely.

It is certainly devastating with a very long recovery period. My niece lived in Asheville… took 3 days before passage out of town was possible… she was told it will likely be months before the city is livable again. Fortunately, her mother lives in Hickory (relatively minor damage) and is currently living there with three of her Asheville friends. I pray for those that can’t find safe refuge nearby…

I had heard that I-40 is finally open east bound from Asheville, but many of the secondary roads are still unpassable, if they are even there. God help them! Being from the W.Va. hills, I understand the devastation that rushing water can cause. Nothing more destructive in the hills.

Pray for us in Ashe county we got hit hard on the upper end of the country I've got a friend that shoots UBR with me and he's a preacher finally talked to him today for about 10 minutes his cell service lost but their roads are gone power bridges all are gone he said they would be with out power for at least 6-7 weeks I live in town and been with out since Friday at 6am heres a pitcher of the town of Lansing and a few more people have lost everything

I'm right in the middle of it. I've cried more and hugged more strangers than I ever have. The community is working together like I've never seen before. These creeks are normally 10 ft wide and 1 ft deep on top pic and this pic was the day after and it's still huge. You can see how high it got tree on left. These were close to my house. Took them as my son and I was cutting the roads out.

This pic below the creek is supposed to be off behind the semi in a small ravine and the creek is about 5 ft wide and 1 foot deep and the ravine is about 5 foot deep. You can see how wide it is now.

I have so many more pics but I just got a new phone and I had pic quality to high to upload when I took them. Huge concrete bridges down stream from this 25ft high gone.

That's terrible to hear, I assume with concrete bridges washed out these water levels must have reached higher than the 500 year flood plains or something? Have you heard any numbers on that? It's hard to get any solid information on the news. Bridges are usually designed to be higher than the flood plains levels.

This went way way beyond the 500 year flood levels. Busick had over 31" of rain. It was a combination of quantity, short timeframe and water soaked ground. You can't plan for that.

Here in the rest of North Carolina after they asked for supplies we went at it so hard that today they went online and asked" No More baby Formula" because local mothers could not find any--In other words we have cleaned out every Walmart and other stores- sending help as hard as we can--
So many are giving and helping--it is truly appreciated!!!
North Carolina is seeing the BEST of our fellow citizens from all over the country--we are so very grateful!!!!! Thanks to every single person--we will never forget your efforts and amazing generosity

That's sort of what I was thinking but haven't heard any real reporting of that. I've just seen smart comments on internet saying people shouldn't build there but from what I can tell so many of these were not anywhere near where things would normally flood. As you say you can't plan for that.

Our radio said today that it was a 1000 year flood instead ya 100 year flood all I know is that I hope I never see anything like it again my preacher called me today and said it was a different world up there that he and his wife has been helping a small fire department below his house said he'd cried more this week than he ever had and now to beat it all people up there are having to watch out for louters I think it's takes a perty low down sick person to do or think of doing something like that if they would go back to the laws in the Bible eye for an eye tooth for a tooth cut their hand off for stealing it might stop some of this nonescince or maybe at least put the fear of God in them

The wide scale devastation is unbelievable, and with many missing people the death toll is astronomical. Friends tell me very little assistance from FEMA or the National Guard, some are able to drive to get food and water but unfortunately many folks are stranded. Fortunately private organizations and individuals are providing aid. This as jo and the ho stuck to their social engagements, and we now learn they spent remaining FEMA funds on illegals.

Please keep the political comments out of this or the tread will get yanked.
We all know what's going on.

My mother-in-law is right next to Busick. This is something else. Flood of 1916 or worse here in Yancey county. Coordinating water delivery crews right now. Side by side have been a gift from God in all this (and my 372xp and MS460).100 ft wide rivers turned to 3-400yd wide rivera 20-35ft deep.

Yesterday a track hoe and dump trucks showed up where about 80 houses were cutoff. 50 loads of stone later they had a road. That's neighbor taking care of neighbor.
Man you wouldn't believe how much of that we are seeing. Now there are just a few troubles here and there. One dude pulled up to me and asked if the department had wifi and I said you've got to be kidding right? He handed a starlink out the window and said you do now. Somehow he had some air drops by his house. Hendricks racing just dropped poptarts. Lots of poptarts and some meds.
