Western North Carolina

We (Anglican Relief and Development) are heading to Arden NC early Thurs and will leave Sunday.

Some of the FEMA stories are true. Our group had a member in Connecticut who was renting and bringing a 6" chipper. FEMA commandeered it and now we don't have a chipper. No one here in SC will rent one when they find out where it's going.

This one that's not on the news, but came from a friend of my brother's who saw it. They set up a location to provide water, food, and some light medical care. Two FEMA employees came up and asked if any doctors were there to oversee the medical services. They answered No. Then FEMA asked if the water they were providing was approved for distribution. They answered no and FEMA said they were taking it. Well, there happened to be someone there with some cahonies, and he told FEMA "You can leave right now peacefully on your own, otherwise we'll be helping you leave". They drove off and didn't come back.

I've been hearing stories. We may or may not have a private property stash/distribution of supplies as well as fire station. The amount we have is so overwhelming. I'm having to turn supplies and trucks away. Just no place to put it. People just aren't taking a lot of stuff. I have to really force some to take some. Everyone is good or it's give it to someone who needs it more. I haven't a clue what I'm doing.

Absolute destruction. Even though a lot of things are irreplaceable, I hope that most of them have insurance so that reconstruction is at least conceivable.

On TikTok, Nascar driver and helo owner/pilot/volunteer said they needed two stroke oiI. There was a donation site at a local airport collecting supplies to fly down. I offered a case of 24 of two stroke oil, vacuum packed, enough to make 24 gallons of chainsaw gas. Was told they were only taking a list of supplies and that wasn't on it. I wondered how do you get to people if you don't have chainsaws to clear the roads of fallen trees. You have to wonder sometimes. Common sense, it's a rarity these days.

The news organization are just getting up speed on the devastation in western NC. Here is a link to a Facebook page that a college kid runs. He is the go to guy for information about what's going there. The devastation can't be described.
If you find it in your heart donate whatever you can to a local charity in the affected counties. This is a long long term recovery effort.
Transylvania county has been in my heart since I got out of the Navy in 1970. That's where I'll be moving as soon as my house is finished. My charity of choice there is Sharing House. I'm sure there are others like it in the affected counties.

Thanks
Dave

Can't see anything but a Facebookie login page. Facebookie; absolutely effin' no way.

I read or saw on TV that less than 5% have flood insurance.
In some areas, you can't get flood insurance unless you are in a flood zone. Govt establishes these zones. So, when a 1000 year flood proves them at fault for insurance carriers not offering it at all, yes, it should fall on them to fully reimburse, imho. At the very least, it should be cheap but available. Very likely a lobbyist got paid well for that non-sense.

In 2008 we had a 500 year flood here in Iowa. 4.5 feet of water in my house. Wasn't in a flood plain then, but it is now. I'm feelin kinda old as I've been through 2 500 year floods and several 100 year ones. None were complete devastation as those poor souls out east are experiencing. A 1,000 year flood....Terrible....as the loss of lives...

Free food was being cooked in 08 here and given out at the Courthouse in town to feed all the volunteers sandbagging. The State Health Inspector stopped by and said the food needed to be kept at a certain temperature and a warm water hand wash was needed or she was going to shut them down. The Mayor and someone else escorted her to her car.......her lucky day. I was in an endloader after rowing away from my house and was using it to haul sandbags through 5' of water trying to save the electric distribution plant or her car would have been "moved". The National Guard and volunteers were sandbagging in water up to their shoulders. When they said there's no saving it they opened a hole up to drive out the fire truck inside the sandbags that was pumping water out. When that truck came out of there with water almost up to the windshield with people all over it, honking their air horn, we all went wild.....brings tears to my eyes just typing this. Disasters bring the good out in people...May God Bless all the victims and volunteers. Small communities forever...Go Iowa and Go Rednecks out there....

Please pray for those brave and rugged men and women who have defied tyranny and have gone into the mud and water of the hills of the Carolinas to save total strangers. These ARE MEN. THESE ARE HEROES. Please pray for them. May God bless them. May their deeds be an example of what we should all do in our lives here.

More than likely was unaffordable.
No more than likely would have been very affordable for some since they weren't even close to the surveyed flood plains. Not required and didn't feel the need for flood insurance that far out of a flood zone. From what I'm understanding these mud slides and water flooding in coming off of the hills is considered flood damage but no flood insurance because who would have ever thought they needed it.

Broke,
Thanks so much for posting pics of the Burnsville area. Every year, for years, we camped for week up on Flattop grouse hunting. I have a friend that lives above Burnsville across the Cane and have been in touch with his nephew to find out how he was. I had sent a load of clothes, socks, coats up there through a friend. Local game warden had been up to Burnsville assisting in recovery efforts. He sid in one area water had risen 47 feet judging by how high things were in the trees left standing. He also said it was horrific and he will never unsee some the stuff he witnessed. Down the mountain and a bit east, Western Catawba county experienced some localized flooding and damaged homes due to falling trees but it pales in comparison to what happened to y'all. If you need anything and I can get it to you, pm me.

My Grandson is doing storm appraisals in the Asheville area. He said that it is so bad he is spending all his time putting tarps on roofs. Appraisals will come later. He does have some FEMA nightmare stories. Josh is a person with no sense of direction. When in middle school he walked 2 blocks from home and couldn't find his way home. A college degree didn't help that. That means he has to live by GPS, well guess what! With all the torn up loads, his GPS is useless!
God Bless him, he is making do.
