Western North Carolina

Broke,
Thanks so much for posting pics of the Burnsville area. Every year, for years, we camped for week up on Flattop grouse hunting. I have a friend that lives above Burnsville across the Cane and have been in touch with his nephew to find out how he was. I had sent a load of clothes, socks, coats up there through a friend. Local game warden had been up to Burnsville assisting in recovery efforts. He sid in one area water had risen 47 feet judging by how high things were in the trees left standing. He also said it was horrific and he will never unsee some the stuff he witnessed. Down the mountain and a bit east, Western Catawba county experienced some localized flooding and damaged homes due to falling trees but it pales in comparison to what happened to y'all. If you need anything and I can get it to you, pm me.
Mike
Words can't describe how high and the volume of water came down Cane and North Toe rivers. I'm not far from Flat top.

On top of Flattop, a grouse hunter buried his dog , Bandit. Beautiful spot. The cross and little fence was about gone 10 years ago. I hope when I'm gone my ashes can keep Bandit company. I assume 19 W up to Spivey Gap is torn up?

I believe you can only access from Tennessee right now. Maybe ATV/side by side. Some low water crossings have been put in.

I will pray for y'all every day. At almost 60, with a shitty back I would be in the way up there. I'll keep sending stuff your way. Hope for some semblance of normal comes soon. As a small business owner, I feel both the human and financial loss and hopefully can come up this Spring and spend a few $$.

I gained weight. The ladies and wives came to the fire department and cooked to make warm food available to the community as people emptied there freezers to donate to the fire dept. We had a backup generator running and brought in freezers so the ladies made it happen. They packed us food to take as we cut out roads early on. I are more ribs in the last 3 weeks than I've ate in the last 2 years.

The news organization are just getting up speed on the devastation in western NC. Here is a link to a Facebook page that a college kid runs. He is the go to guy for information about what's going there. The devastation can't be described.
If you find it in your heart donate whatever you can to a local charity in the affected counties. This is a long long term recovery effort.
Transylvania county has been in my heart since I got out of the Navy in 1970. That's where I'll be moving as soon as my house is finished. My charity of choice there is Sharing House. I'm sure there are others like it in the affected counties.

Thanks
Dave

Dave, Transylvania county is my hometown. My parents still live in Pisgah Forest. Luckily they had no major damage but lots of friends didn't fair so well. its gonna be a long road to recover.

Not sure where in the county your gonna be but I still come home and groundhog hunt and target shoot fairly often. I have some good places to go and shoot long range as well as hunt. Several good "shooting buddies" around. Shoot me a pm sometime. Matt

The National news has moved on to nothing but the election coverage. That sells advertising. I look at the local newspapers. Here's a link to an article in the Asheville paper with the staggering numbers of rainfall, flood levels, bridges out etc. People are grinding through the new normal. There's a drive to collect winter coats around here. Time to go through my closet.

From Dave Tooley's "Helene by the Numbers" article, number of gallons of water that fell east of the Mississippi during the hurricane is practically the same as the national debt. That's a bunch of bucks. N

Asheville and surrounding areas were bad. I think water was 10' above the 1916 flood. People without houses making it out with the clothes on their back. Roads washed out landslides keeping help from getting to them. My friends family cemetery was hit with coffins floating down the river. Keep praying for this area. It won't recover for sometime. Cold weather setting in will be bad also.

Boss, if this isn't legal, please delete but I have a bud near Weaverville, who had the small bridge to his home washed out. He's got a go fund me site set up to try and get an excavator or other heavy equipment in to restore it. There's a photo of it on this site. He has a bud that lives with him who's in a wheelchair and owns a van but can't get to work because of the bridge being out. Any help greatly appreciated.

The national guard is doing repairs around here. They are saying if you buy the Culvert they will haul and install for free. That's the word anyway.
