30BR 700 BDL build

Hi Al

Awesome that I am not alone on this 30BR hunting rifle journey. I set back a take off 308 12 twist Remington varmint barrel to build a " fun gun" to play with. I will probably never shoot custom bullets out of it...not the purpose..and I have target rifles for that itch.
So far 125 TNTs shoot very well. Been playing with Sierra 150gr spire points and 168 match bullets. Figured out I quickly run out of powder space for the 168s. Throating reamer enroute. Hoping to be able to get 168s running 2500 to match data in Sierra manual. ;)

Little range time yesterday..sole purpose was to see what speeds were obtainable with 150gr Sierra Prohunters and 168 Matchkings. No tuning..just seated bullets just off rifling. So far without undue stress on the cases i was able to reach 2500fps with 168s and 2600 with 150s. The suprise was N130 powder with the heavier bullets. Tried H322 but seemed like i was running out of powder capacity to make speed. 2015 powder also gave 2500fps with 168s. 168 groups Fun fun!!20240913_182627.jpg20240913_174921.jpg

Finally got everything together for a range session today. 125gr Sierra Gamechangers, 7BR brass necked up and turned, N130 powder. Super windy day at range so no flags as I didnt want to go chasing them across the range!!
At the end of the day I achieved 2792 fps with a case full of N130 and no signs of excess pressure on the case and no grumblings from the rifle bolt. For kicks I shot the same bullets out of my Hunter gun 30BR 15 twist at around 2882 fps and again with a case full of N130...and again no pressure signs on case no grumblings from the bolt. Point of trying Hunter gun was to see if the throating was enough to handle the longer 125gr bullets without running past the neck shoulder junction for a "fairly standard" 30BR chamber more designed for lighter 112s, 115s bullets. Mission accomplished there. Both rifles shot great for today's no flag conditions. I will find my target and post groups. The fun continues!! :D

Hunter gun target and bullets seated are first 2 pictures
700 throw together build pictures 3&4.

On a more calm day with flags these groups would be much smaller as they are mostly wide by virtue of mother natures doings of the day.

My Smith has got my barrel done and this weekend I bedded the BDL stock and got the scope mounted. Fire formed 4 piece of brass and got initial velocities with the 125 noslers.
Rifle build list review:
Remington factory Short Action
Shieln 15 twist #5 contour 22" threaded 5/8x24
Remington BDL stock
Alpha 6br brass necked up to 30

In the brass photo top piece is just necked up 6b bottom piece is fire formed.

33gr of Lt30 gave me a velocity of 2830
I believe a fire formed case will hold one more gr of powder. Can wait to get to the range and see how it shoots. Brass has been sent to harrel's to get a die made

That’s gonna be a killer rifle and load. When my kids were young I downloaded a 308 with that 125 NBT to about 2900 and they will put a deers lights out. Bang flops for sure.
In my experience the Nosler 125 gr. B T & A B seem to perform better at slightly slower speeds than max. especially at shorter range shots. I also hunt with a Rem Model 7 in 30BR.

Thanks for the great info. I'm excited about this build. I think a 30 br is going to do a number on deer
Keep it simple so you don't have a major unforseen problem. Cover all the bases as AL said. I would be concerned about how to get a highly modified spec sizing die. You don't want to get a barrel and cannot find someone to make an expensive non STD die. A std 30BR will kill deer.

Harrel's got me a die made up

About 15 years ago the bunch I shoot with were discussing deer and hog hunting and decided 250-300yds was max. After much talk we tried Sierra 125s and Nosler 125 BTs. I have about 75 30-06 125 BTs that are in the case with the truck gun. I think it's just a way less sophisticated way of doing almost the same thing. Mine are loaded way less than max but as load development went, some were tested at near max. They were pretty speedy and recoil was more than noticeable.
