Does anyone know the length of the .224 62 grain ELD-VT? The video from Hornady explains them as long. I’m wondering if they use the 75ELD form with a shorter lead core. I hope not.

I didn’t measure it but here is a 62 ELD next to a 75 Berger

Also loaded in a 22-250ai case at 2.60 coal

I got these from Midway. No prayer of shooting these in an AR with a 223 length case. The Wyatt detachable mag on my 223AI had plenty of length so I gave it a go, even though I only have 1:8 twist (left the suppressor off though!). I fired three shots with a conservative charge of CFE223, just over 223Rem max. The group was not great for this gun but the holes looked normal.

I'm going to work up to higher charges and then fire a few groups and see how it looks. Only group to date was over 1" at 100 yards, I wouldn't bother continuing if that doesn't tighten up.

I have a spare upper so I'm seriously considering building a 22ARC anyways.

Hornady podcast indicated the 62 gr was not suitable for 223 rem. Mentioned something to the effect of the ARC chamberings being gtg for any weights in the cal, but these VTs are not exactly backwards compatible for all chamberings in the cal. Freebore differences.

My rifle is not an AR, but the chamber isn't custom in any way either. Standard 223AI chamber from McGowen. I was actually surprised in how far back on the bullet the ogive is on the VT. It's not shockingly different than the 53gr VMAX I was using in this gun. I simply set the jump to the same as the 53gr VMAX, the extra bullet in the case was not dramatic. But I'm not mag restricted in OAL.

Standard 223a from PO Ackley is same freebore as as the 223 Wylde. 60 thou.

I shot 20 today in two loads from my 22-250ai

First load ran at 3250, which was disappointingly low with the load data used. First four shot quite well, 5th shot flew out, bullet still made a round hole.

Second load ran up to 3430 and the bullet made the target just fine. Accuracy was terrible as my suppressor needed a good cleaning as well as the rifle.

The good news is it looks like they’ll hold together at high speed from a fast twist rifle.

Bad news, for me anyway, is my rifle was waaaaay dirtier than I should have met it get.

I’ll post again when I can give these another shot.
