Found a Special Sako, What To Do?

Well I been looking for a factory rifle for group, score, and live varmint score competitions. I was looking at the Savage LRPV, but didn't want to go with a rifle that mimics my 600 yard gun in size, or weigh more than my light varmint BR gun.

I also didn't want a rifle utilizing a barrel made to shoot heavy for caliber bullets designed for over 400 yard competition. I mean close range inside 300, usually 200 yards seeking extreme accuracy is best suited to higher velocity, low recoil, well mannered medium wieght for caliber bullets, for best short range bench options.

So finally I stumbled across a real jewel from decades past. A Sako Vixen, 6ppc single shot, heavy barrel, in a varmint style stock, L461 B prefix, three serial numbered action, with their very well respected externally adjustable target trigger. ------UNFIRED, IN THE ORIGINAL BOX---‐--

So I ask, from all here familiar with this 1988 produced factory offering, I would like to know any experience others have had with this model Sako in the 6ppc chamber.

Did I make the right decision, and will it compete with the newer Savage Rifles and Tikka today?

I have seen Manny prefer 322 in these Rifles over 133 powder. I've also been told they have longer throats, so BT are not favorable.

How well were these bedded from the factory? Are the barrels free floated from the factory?

Is this trigger better than the target triggers that come on the Savage Rifles?

Fire away and get me ready for when I pick it up Friday. Thanks for any heads up and help.

LOL, of course it will compete. Some consider that rifle one of the most accurate factory rifles ever made, accuracy varied from rifle to rifle but generally they are very accurate. I have a couple of Tikka Master sporters that will run with that Sako but most won’t. Finding one unfired with the original box is pretty cool, congrats on that. I have a few Sakos, one of my favorite rifle brands. I have a Sako 6PPC factory rifle and the same rifle in 22PPC, also a factory offering, these have sporter barrels and are repeaters, both shoot in the .3s, sometimes better if I do my part. There is a lot of threads on the rifle you found, search here and search the web. If yours has a hole in the trigger guard then you have the single shot model I like the most, you can adjust the trigger through that hole. You should share pic, they are neat rifles. I’ve seen quite a few for sale lately but that’s usually not the case.

I’d try and find some of the Sako 6PPC brass, just works well in those rifles. You’ll see it here and on gunbroker now and again. That’s what I do anyways.

Fun! Enjoy!

You did well. There are¹ local Varmint Rifle matches that ban that rifle from competing in Factory classes. I Had one in 6PPC when Sako brass was all that was available. I shot it in 200 and 300yd score matches and embarrassed a couple shooters who had full blown BR rifles. My load was 68 Bergers and H322. Prior to that rifle, I had been trying to shoot against BR PPC's with a 40x 222 and couldn't beat the BR guns.

That trigger is excellent. The Sako is a fine rifle. The Savage is just a tool.

I still have the Neil Jones dies, brass, and a box of Sako Factory ammo. I'll pm you about those items when I look to see what's there.

Had one years ago in a single shot version. Traded it off because it was so boringly accurate. Every bullet/powder combo I tried wanted to shoot one hole, no challenge for a newbie reloader. LOL, wish I had it back.

IMHO you have found what a lot of us consider Nirvana.I believe you will do very well with it for your intended purpose.I know you will be competing with it and probably will want to keep the round count down but I hope you get a chance to bust at least a few crows and ‘chucks with it just for posterity. That rifle and stock style are my absolute favorite Varmint rifle and are a true example of classic beauty.Enjoy.

You won't be disappointed. I was tempted to buy one last year, but as it was a bit expensive and I really had no use for one - mind you, that shouldn't be a reason not to buy another rifle .(currently refurbishing a 1960's BSA Hunter in 6.5/06 Ackley. Pac Nor barrel)

About the same story here, Sako 75 repeater 6ppc, loved H322 and 66-68gr target bullets. But it would not shoot a V-Max, Blitz or any type varmint bullet nearly as well.

I have had 2 of them bought new. One 2 digit and one a very very low 3 digit. First one shot like s built bench rifle. Second one was just another factory rifle. So you can get a star or not, just like good factory rifles tend to run. As mentioned above many local matches ban 6 ppc as a factory cartridge. H322 was what I loaded in mine. I saw a 75 in 6ppc that was set in a real bench rest stock that was fantastic.

Yes it states it has the externally adjustable trigger, as well as a "B" prefix three digit serial number gun this one 066.

I actually missed out on the same rifle in 22ppc new in the box this guy sold the week before. I would have rather had it.

I have 200 6ppc Norma brass coming from Brunos, that I have been told is excellent in this clambering. They also had 22ppc headstamp brass in stock.

Thanks for the confirmation on your experience.

Will that Sako compete with a new Savage- Really?
If it will it will be the only rifle I'm aware of at the matches I attend. It is seldom I see anything take 1st place over one variant or the other of the Savage LRPV. It dominates factory class around here.

I hope it is not banned around here! That is the only reason I bought this particular rifle

I could have bought the same rifle in any of the 3 year prefix it was built in used. But that would be of little use had they been used for target guns.

My perspective was anything in good enough physical appearance in this model, being for sale was probably at or near the end of its accuracy life. That would be no use to me as I can't rebarrel it and use it in factory class.

This was the only reason I paid the premium price to have it unfired, I want it to last me as long I can continue to shoot matches with it

Sad news, but thanks for the heads up!

Hey Bob, I just might have to get my Savage LRPV out next season and see what that Sako can do.
Bring it Jay! I refuse to shoot my full blown 6br Savage custom varmint rifle at Delphose in Varmint class, and call it factory. I bought this to use there against those rifles, as well Varmint for score matches around area the demand they be real Factory guns.

I took a chance as we both know, THE SAVAGE FACTORY LRPV is the rifle we have to beat using anything else! I'm hoping I can get a win now and then?

Bring your ppc you shoot in unlimited as well. I parked the duece for these last 2 200 yard matches of the season. I'll be bringing the Bat Scoville 6ppc for the finnaly. I am sure this rifle won't outshoot it!

Stay Healthy Jay.
