Barrel Nut Disadvantages?

Whichever one of you monkeys that ends up testing this... It might be worth testing a load that ISN'T perfectly tuned for the gun and seeing what difference it makes? A lot of new shooters choose a nut barrel because they're new (not all, dont flame me) but their reloading skills might be limited and might be shooting factory ammo.

A couple of posters have mentioned the actual size of a barrel nut might present a problem.

Not particularly the length, but more the diameter. Too thin, the nut could distort, compromising the joint.
Too large, aesthetics become an issue.

Any thoughts on this?

Someone on here obviously does not want the test done. I hope Jackie gets it done and followed up with others. Most on here do not understand the level of precision or accuracy that Registered Competition demands. " Not world class but close enough" won't cut it in our disciplines.

When we do a test we always cover a lot of ground. We want to see how small they will shoot but also if the window was effected or how bad they shoot out of tune. This is particularly true when testing primers. Many times a couple of primers will shoot small, but one shoots a lot better when off tune.

I looked at that bug nut bug holes is selling. They make them in 1/16-18tpi with an od of 1.300. I think that would be the way to go. I didnt see one with 1.125-16 threads for your M so you would need to make one up. I wouldnt worry about looks, Im sure you will design it to work well.

When I was in the industry working as a mechanical engineer and later as a Six Sigma Black belt I dealt with production people and management people all the time who said that their data was good and it "proved" this or that. Many times you would have a company doing something because they did something 25 years ago a few times and then it just became gospel that that's how you're supposed to do it. Well that's what's going to happen if you do one test and it comes out. This thread will be returned to a thousand times as the defining moment in testing of this one subject. The day that the question was answered with the data point of one. Now written in the book forever as the defining answer for everyone else in the whole world.

Alex just said it these other tests have been performed literally hundreds of times in hundreds of rifles. Testing primers and powder and bullets for example. Repeated over and over and over again until the data rises to the top. But this test will only be a data point of one, and has no more validity than flipping a coin. But I do have a feeling it will just be referred to over and over and over again for decades as being the definite moment that set the record straight.

Jackie, my approach is going to be an 1.250 O.D. round nut with two blind holes on the front face and a two pin style spanner wrench.

I sketched up a Tommy bar' style, too. But this could distort the nut when torqued aggressively.

All joking aside... wouldn't that be the best way to test the differences? We already know barrel nuts will get the job done, no one is denying that. But this is a thread full of guys willing to split hairs and experiment.

To me this is ford vs Chevy, both have merits.
My two best barrels were 7mm brux with barrel nuts, amazing shooters that made me look like a competent but that’s just a barrel blank lottery win in my opinion.

I’ve burned out way more barrel nut barrels than shouldered barrels but I’m really liking shouldered now for the weight, ease of swapping and enjoyment of cutting them.

I’m interested to see test results and format it takes regardless

I used to see that a lot in fly casting competitions, people would spend a fortune on the hottest lines and rods instead of optimizing what they had and putting in the many hours of practice and then upsetting themselves with the new equipment.

I almost hate to say this, but the barrel harmonics may also change when the shoulder it turned off and threaded for the nut.

I know some some dominant competitors. They don't copy. They innovate. They don't give a flip what the other guy is using.

There are like millions of nut barrels out there just working like a champ. And now there is this teeny tiny group of people that are going to set the record straight on this whole thing.

In fact, after posting here for many years it always seems to come down to this teeny group of people that must bless anything before it is considered valid. It's the ultimate snobbery. No matter what anyone is doing in the industry or competition outside this microscopic group, it is invalid until blessed by this group. On nearly every subject.

Nut barrels are everywhere. For a long time. Some of the posts here seem to presume this is a new invention.

That's the only one that only comes in black. They haven't made a run of that thread in years, because no one buys them. 18tpi threads are custom actions and people don't use nut barrels.
