Shouldered or Nut Barrel

There is a smith up in New Hampshire I can't remember his name for the life of me,
anyways he machines they end of the barrel into a hex so he can use a wrench, and he does not even have to remove the stock to swap barrels. Barrel nut or Shoulder it's a one Minute swap how cool is that.

I do that for all Accuracy International barrels as well as those I do for another customer.

Functionally there is a difference. With a shouldered barrel the shoulder does the pointing of the barrel, the threads just pull it tight against the action face. A nut barrel transfers the job of pointing the barrel to the threads. I prefer a shoulder, I dont like using threads for anything but clamping force.

Are you talking about Larry Racine?

Yes thats who he means. He does that on shouldered barrels. You still have to get to the nut if it has one and its pretty tuff to work a wrench 30” away from your work. I seen a guy chambering both ends of a barrel one time too. Everybody thought it was a good idea to have another chamber once your lands eroded. Chambers dont make a good crown either.

Larry did a shouldered switch barrel setup for me and it's awesome
