Pistol shooters…..?

Even though I have 2 handguns I’ve never really been a pistol (handgun) shooter. So, I’m not really up on what’s good, acceptable or bad. So my question - how good are the Rock Island (Armscor) 1911’s? Specifically the Ultra FS?

I have recently stocked up on my pistol stock. looking hard into the PPC line. Buy with your pocket and buy once cry once!

I have a 6" Bulleye pistol from MetroArms (a branch for Rock Island/Armscor/ etc.). Cost me $1000 and it works very well for me. All I did to it was fit an optic mount on it and went shooting. I can not say enough good things about it. The fit is tight and I have had zero issues with it.

If you reload you could improve on this platform. Tons of help on this site.

I have always been a rifleman...but I shoot alot of pistol, and revolver.
For any defense gun
A pistol has to be fully functional...get a brand that feeds and ejects without fail...a reputation ...a long history of working...nothing new..period.
It can be ugly...you may not even like its appearance, hate looking at it.."don't matter."
But the thing is functional, right capacity, points good, sight okay,...magazines pop out when the release is hit.
It's a tool, a proven well functioning tool....it works with all ammo that's run through it.
Accuracy not that important, ...it'll be more accurate than you in a stressful situation...function failure can be deadly if it fails.
It should be Chambered in 9mm luger...so you can afford to shoot it, ammo available in a multitude of defense rounds....available everywhere...live rounds found out in the woods and on many city streets...
Never out of ammo...just hang on to your 9mm pistol, look down and around sooner or later you'll find a live round or several...

There are other rounds out there that out preform the 9mm. Comanality of ammunition is something to think about but not for home defense.

I have a Rock Island Tactical FS in 10 MM and it,s been a very good pistol for me.They're well made and loaded with features for the price.I would highly recommend it.i have a Leupold Delta Point red dot on mine and with good ammo it'll stay inside 3 inches at 50 yards.I bought it to hunt deer with, but other than being a little heavy,it would work well for a lot of different uses.

Owned the basic R.I. 1911 in 45 acp. Cheaply made but it did work. Thumb safety may be pot metal??? Also had the R.I. 1911 22 mag. Malfunctioning item. Sold them both and bought a Ruger SR1911. Excellent quality piece.

I picked up one of their 1911's probably 8-9 years ago. 9mm double stack, 17+1. Fit was decent. A little loosey-goosey on the slide, but that's not a bad thing in my particular case (truck/shop gun). Grips were cheap on that particular model, but replaced them with STI-fit grips. The only ammo it's had issues with was Tula steel case. Every other factory ammo I've put through it has ran fine. I'd guess it has about 400-500 rounds through it so far with no mechanical problems. 6-8 inch groups at 20-25 yards are average, which is pretty much normal for me freehand. I'm not much of a pistola shooter.

I've been a lifelong pistol shooter and competed for about 30 years in NRA Precision, Hunter Pistol Silhouette and the United States Revolver Competition. In the late 60's through the 80's I hunted groundhogs extensively with a pistol and dabbled in deer hunting with a pistol. These days, I'm a regularly paper puncher at the pistol range because I just enjoy target shooting pistols.

I've owned and shot a few semi-auto's but for me I'm a 100% revolver guy. I know it's not in vogue anymore but for me, the reliability, the quality, and performance of a revolver suits me perfectly. I have no desire or need to own a semi-auto. If you can't do it with six, well you're probably not going to do it. ;) However, you can't play Rambo or Navel Seal with a revolver. :( Never could understand what is being achieved by shooting 10 to 15 rounds of sustained fire.

I haven't purchased a revolver in a long time, but the S&W's were the top of the line in my purchasing days. I own several, most are over 30 years old, some older still. They still shoot and function flawlessly. If you take care of them, they will last a lifetime and probably your child's lifetime. They are maintenance friendly also.

With a little aftermarket work, the Ruger Single Actions are very reliable and fun to shoot and can be very accurate. I've owned several Blackhawks and Single Sixes.

The new Colts look awful nice, but the prices are horrendous but what isn't these days. I guess it's not too bad if you consider it a lifetime investment and if you're young enough to amortize the cost. Those days are long gone for me, or I'd take the plunge. See how easy it is to talk yourself into buying a new gun. :)

Those are my thoughts from a "gray beard" pistol shooter for another era. :)

Just get a Glock, with hole of your choice, and shoot your way back to your rifle. Or better yet, a poly80 'glock'.

Check out Springfield if you want quality and value priced. I have a Range Officer in 9mm and did a few mods to it and its a shooter. They just came out with a double stack 9mm that's optics ready. It looks to be a very nice gun if you plan on club shooting alot with it. I want one, lol

Rock Island isn’t a Nighthawk, Wilson or Dan Wesson but the two I had functioned just fine, zero failures to feed even when breaking in. Nice thing about a decent 1911 is that they can be improved on if so desired. Lots of gunsmiths out there that can do small things to tweak them and make them better if so desired. If you do move forward with your purchase buy or load a case of ammo and shoot, shoot, shoot it, break it in and see if you like it. Price point is low enough that you can sell it with little loss if you don’t connect with it. I would shoot any ammo you intend to use, don’t just shoot FMJ and then load it with a mag full of hollow points without running several mags to see if there are issues (seen that happen a lot). Just my opinion. Good luck with your decision.
