Why have I wasted so much of my life picking up brass?

I remember when I was a kid my father taking me to a local range and I got the biggest enjoyment out of picking up empty brass that shooters left behind. I started a cartridge collection that I still have to this day. All sorts of oddball cases by today’s standards were laying there just for the picking.348 Win,32-40Win,25-35,219 Zipper etc. I have often wondered what kind of rifles these were chambered in and why some of the guys chose the cartridges that they did. I still get these cartridges out from time to time and reminisce about the good old days when I was a kid. So I am glad I picked up all that range brass it has led to a lifetime of shooting and hunting that is priceless!
I used to be enthused about picking brass and finding different ones to. I did collect some for awhile. Don’t have them anymore. It’s great you have yours. Im sure they provide you with A lot of great memories.

Get a trash grabber, one with the rubber suction cup type things on the tips.

You won't spend much less time picking up brass, but you also won't (like me) spend 5 seconds trying to bend over, and another 5 trying to stand up again.
Thanks- I’ll look into that.

Get a brass pick up roller or build a brass catcher for bench shooting... Lay out a tarp or sheet and you only have to bend over twice basically , once to put down sheet or tarp and once to pick it up with your brass in it... The rollers that pick up brass are awesome.... I have vertigo and a hurt back so bending over will get me one way or another. If you decide to try a roller there's one from Caldwell , it's ok but there's another company you can look up that's awesome and you will know from the reviews when you find it... A friend gave me his old Caldwell after buying the better model...
I have one of the rollers which didn’t really work for me. I’ll look into them. The rest of the stuff like catchers and tarps I have tried and just don’t wanna mess with them anymore. It’s nice. Thanks

I’m looking forward to it. Got a 34 year old Smith, new in box, sitting in safe waiting for me. A bonus - have a lot of 45 acp loaded up and a lot more brass and bullets all that were going to the 1911 and now repurposed to the Wheel Gun:):)
Here's one of mine - Shoots great625 ahrends.jpg

Ya know.......you could just buy steel cased ammo. Fire and fugetaboutit!
Problem is, you can’t find it these days.
Here’s my favorite. I like to shoot 44 Special loads. It’s easier on my hands.

Just shoot a 9mm. 9mm used brass is cheap at 2 cents each. We use a net to catch our brass when we practice and just let it fly at a match.

No problem , the Caldwell works but it's wires are a little weak the better model my friend swears by I can't remember the name and actually just called him to see if there's a name on it... If so I will let you know... It might be the brass wizard if I remember correctly but am not sure....

I had one of those but sold it long ago. Of coarse wish I wouldn’t have. Recently purchased a new model. I like it.

Thanks for getting that info for me. I’ll check into it

When I started loading in the mid '70's, brass was hard to come by & rarely seen in bulk, so it usually was expensive. Every piece was like precious metal to me. Yes, a good source of exercise.
One day a few years back I was thumbing through a Natchez sales fly & Blazer aluminum was about as cheap as I'd seen it. I thought that I hadn't bought factory centerfire ammo in decades, but wasn't shooting my auto's like I'd like and I was tired of loosing brass. I ordered a case of 45, 40 & nine. I enjoyed then enough that I ordered a couple more cases. Most of those are gone as well, but not a good time to restock.

Jerry Michulec stated that he became a revolver shooter due to where he lived. Said he started out shooting an auto & lived in E. Texas or Louisiana & that meant you were either standing in water or in a boat. He was loosing way too much brass when doing the amount of shooting he wanted to do. So, he switched to a revolver.
