Personal Experience --Cataract Lenses--with Scopes

I am about to have cataract lens implants--I shoot with a scope only 90% of the time--irons don't matter to me
My Dr says get the Panoptix trifocal --but I am not sure he understands exactly what I might need for shooting with a scope--He says he does but I am looking for Personal experience from shooters that have had lens replacements
I shoot OK with a crappy yellow lens eye--so I don't see how any upgrade will be worse --any kind of upgrade

Good morning. I had the surgery a couple years ago and opted for straight distance lenses in both eyes. I am so happy I did it was the right choice for me. I have zero issues looking through the scope. I shoot with a 60 Power golden eagle and a 60 Power March I can see very well through both.
I have a friend that opted for a close lenses in one eye and distance in the other and he is having a lot of issues with that choice.
I use cheap cheaters to read and my distance is very good and I now use sunglasses I get at any store no prescription required.

Because I’ve worn glasses most of my life, I chose fixed power lens that have a focus distance on/at the scope reticle. I have to wear glasses for distance (driving). I’d heard of too many that experienced issues with variable power lens after a few years and then had to wear glasses. I’m three years post surgery… likely there have been improvements…

The optical design of a telescopic sight is based on the users eye being 20/20 (1MOA acuity) with the interocular lens in the relaxed condition (Distance Vision). The ocular assembly (eyepiece) usually provides for +/- 2 Diopters of correction for relaxed acuity. Therefore it would be best to select an interocular implant lens for 20/20 (or better) acuity Distance Vision. IMHO

Agree.

Just had my second IOL implant with astigmatism correction. Very clear and perfect for shooting. Only wear reading glasses for really small print.

I had my right eye done last winter and glad I did. Even with glasses the crosshairs were a bit fuzzy, not so now...Evereything is crisp and sharp. I still wear glasses as the left eye is not bad enough to warrant the surgery. The right glass lense has no script in it.

I have had both eyes done, I selected distance vision as the default view. Now I can get up in the morning and see things at distance. This requires me to use bifocal reading glasses to see up close. The tops are clear, the bottoms have my reading correction. I wear them when shooting.

You will probably have to refocus the reticle.

I shoot and hunt with my eye surgeon. I have aspherical single focus distance lenses and they suit me perfect for shooting. He says if he was getting them now, the latest and greatest are these by Johnson & Johnson
TECNIS EyhanceTM IOL He did say the trifocals are problematic at night, halos.

Had both of mine done earlier this year for distance vision. After tweaking the ocular the reticle and target are more focused than before surgery. Many have problems with the multi focal lens, and not an option if you had lasik.

From an old 2018 post of mine:

Over a period from 2005 to 2013 I developed cataracts in both eyes and in 2013 had the natural inner lenses removed and replaced with interocular implants (distance vision only). In 2005 my visual acuity was correctable to 20/20 (6/6 rest of world)(1MOA) and by 2013 had deteriorated to correctable to 20/40 (6/12)(2MOA). Post repair my visual acuity is now 20/15 (6/4.5)(0.8MOA) without corrective lenses (hooray!). I do wear glasses with 0 distance correction and +2.5 diopter reading correction when doing close work or reading but not when shooting.

As my vision deteriorated the amount of detail that I could see in the mirage lessened even with the same scopes and magnification. Now I'm seeing more detail in the mirage than I ever had even with corrected to 20/20 (6/6) visual acuity.

Note that telescopic sights are designed for distance vision (relaxed interocular lens accommodation) of a user with visual acuity of or correctable to 20/20 (6/6)(1MOA). The eyepiece typically provides for +/- 2 diopters of correction for individual user actual visual acuity.

12/5/2022 update - My visual acuity is still 20/15 (6/4.5)(0.8MOA) without corrective lenses for left eye and 20/20 (6/6)(1MOA) without corrective lenses for right eye. Therefore I have changed from slightly right eye dominant to slightly left eye dominant (due to diabetic neuropathy). Not bad enough to change to shooting left handed (actually see flags better with both eyes open). However I do all optical comparison testing using my left eye now.

Got mine for distance. Spent the last 60+ years nearsighted, thought I'd try the next 60 farsighted......

Two years ago…straight for distance, use the cheapies 175 mag for reading. Colors are brighter, now have 20/20 in both eyes at 75/years old. Using a scope is noooo problem at all. You will see a tremendous difference..

Had the same issue a couple of years ago ... got the choice between "Perfect Distance" or "Perfect Reading" ... as I was not a candidate for monocular or astigmatic lens replacement. Chose distance, and now I see perfectly through the scope. Biggest issue is that I need to pop on my reading glasses to see the turrets to adjust windage and elevation ... but that's no big deal since I'm primarily a bench shooter.

I just finished up my Lens replacements with Dr Jeff Whitsett in Houston.

I went for the new RxSIGHT Light adjustable lens.

These lens can be adjuste with high intensity Ultra Violet Light after they are implanted,
It took Dr Whitsett 3 sessions to get me to uncorrected 20/20 vision. The entire thing took about 40 days.

I could not be more pleased. I can see great. Looking through a scope is no problem.

The only downside is Isurance nor Medicare would cover any of the cost for these lens, it is considered elective surgery. A tad over $10,000.
