Benchrest stock makers

This is spot on. When I started making stocks, I considered doing it as a business. I did my best to do them as fast as I could and it still took about 40 hours to do one. I was still trying to speed up the process when a member here asked me to do a stock for him. I did it and only asked him to make a donation to the site for my effort. When he got the stock, he started complaining that the action screws rubbed In their holes and he could have bought a stock from Stocky’s for $200. I don’t know what he finally donated, but that was it for me. I spent 30 years doing construction jobs for finicky demanding clients. I wasn’t going to spend another minute listening to people whine and complain about my work.
"No good deed goes unpunished", how many times have I learned that lesson. Fixed a guys gun up for him 3 years ago. Cleaned it, removed and remounted scope with mounts and bases I had. I took it to range to site in for him, after trying to have him do it himself. Job done, gave it to him explained what all I did and he said I can hardly wait to shoot it. He turned his back to me walked away no thanks, haven't spoken to him since. He was a friend?

If we're talking short range BR, which is what the previous posters are refering to, the problem with a plywood type of stock is that it won't make weight for light varmint class(10.5 lb). The bare stock needs to be down in the 25 oz. or less range. That's why fiberglass or the carbon fiber skinned balsa stocks are preferred.

The heavier plywood or laminated woods should be fine for heavy varmint(13.5 lb) though.
In addition to weight, some BR rules include restrictions on shape. Example I had a laminate that was too heavy for HV and I learned that even if I lightened it up, the back end was too flat for an NBRSA HV gun. This from @JMayo :

”The rake has to be ibs & nbrsa compliant.”

Just be aware that weight is not the only issue before you buy a BR stock.

Waiting on one of those 25 Kelblys mentioned by @JMayo and a McMillan Edge.…

I posted the stock shape rule above

That rear stock is going to take a ton of work to be light enough and to be legal. Ill get one from you and see what itll take

The laminated baby tracker i had years ago had deep cut outs in the forend the butt was really slim in width all to get weight out
it ended up cracking on me in the wrist area it was so narrow
all that said it did make LV with a panda and no tuner
So one of these may not be to bad to get to a HV once you get the rake fixed

Brunos had some McMillan BR stocks semi inlet, they also had a KESTROS BR stock that looked like the diagram above, nice looking stock.

I worked with a Baby Tracker Panda glue in that cracked diagonally through the wrist. Inletted a piece of carbon fiber rod at an angle from the back of the tang almost to the bottom. Then, it got a dove tailed recoil lug up front and converted to a pillar bedded bolt in.

Moving the recoil load to the front and having clearance behind the rear tang area and the stock got ahead of any future cracking. Plus, the gun seemed to handle better. It still made the LV 10.5 lb. weight with a ounce to spare.

A similar LV stock of obeche wood was a dismal failure. :( -Al
