Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

Heck yeah! This country can’t invent anything, never has
The battery, as we know it has been around for over 200 years; or almost twice as long as the ICE. The combustion engine in it's lifetime has become orders of magnitude more powerful and efficient while becoming ever lighter in terms of HP/LB. Batteries haven't really kept up developmentally when you consider how much work they deliver for their weight. The future may indeed be electric, but automakers have given themselves eight years to advance a technology that's already over 220 years old to surpass a technology that's half that age and ten times more utilized. In other words, if we just give batteries another 4% they'll be the cat's ass and everyone will happily dump the icky dino juice. I'm not holding my breath that we'll see a 1000 pound battery (approx weight of a V8 engine, 10 speed trans, and 22 gallons of fuel) move a 5000 pound truck 400 miles any time soon.

Our 88 Toy pickup SR5 (4X2) still runs with 450K miles. It's not very beautiful. 22RE. 25 mpg still.
Our 2013 Prius-V is pretty awesome, except for the seats designed for small people. Batteries are still good at 120K. Fingers crossed. 45 mpg.
We haven't saved enough in fuel costs to offset the extra vehicle cost compared to a Camry.

A few days later. I received a handful of "Likes." Thanks

I bought my 2003 Tacoma Xtra Cab 4x4 in 2008 for $8,000, w/ 60k miles on it. I could sell it today for over $30k. There have been early Tacomas sell for $40k on Bring A Trailer. Here's a low-mile example:

Wishing for a lite weight battery isn't going to make it so. The reality is we do not have enough electric generation to charge them as it is. Plus much of are generation is still coal and natural gas. technology will get there some day but its not today or 10 years from now. Much of the every day stuff we cosume comes form liquid petroleum. And there are hundreds of years in the ground for the taking. There is no point to burn down the current system just to move to a 3rd world country. I'll bet many don't understand ohms law. Were does electric come from? It comes from the wall outlet is the standard answer

How’s about we up the game and promote miniature nuclear power plants in cars? I mean, if we’re gonna go nuts........let’s go really nuts!:rolleyes:
Remember the testbed airborne nuclear power plant inside an NB-36H? It didn't power the aircraft, they just wanted to carry it around "hot" for a while. But niggling little problems remained unsolved, like the need for heavy shielding to protect the crew and those on the ground from radiation, and dealing with inevitable crashes." Pretty ship, though. That's a B-29 B-50 in the background.

Nonetheless, none of those repair trucks are EVs. And in a disaster area, with widespread grid destruction, how would you charge EVs after Day 1? Wait, don't tell me dedicated portable diesel generators. And how would those move about? It's a house of mirrors.

Its no different than it is right now actually. We carry fuel trucks and big generators for the camps. The camps are located in spots that can have power restored very quickly anyway so there is electricity within days if not the first day. The electric bucket trucks and digger derricks are already in the field. The only reason theres none in that picture is that its old. Right now in florida duke energy, fpl, irby, and plc have electric trucks there putting them thru the paces. I doubt theyre venturing off into hell for the 2 day stuck shifts but theyre in service right now. The trucks will come back to camp to grab parts and assignments multiple times a day, so no problem topping them off.
