Alec Baldwin shot and killed someone on set

A number of years ago I was really into analyzing airplane accidents and seeing the string of events that, by themselves, were minor. But when chained together (and not interrupted/discovered as part of normal processes and checklists) lead to catastrophic results. I've tried to design my loading processes with this in mind - establishing rules, protocols and checks to catch mistakes.

There were so many opportunities to prevent this tragedy. While I'm aghast at all the mistakes - allowing/having live fire off set with firearms that were being used on set is utterly astonishing. Add inexperienced armorer, a guy declaring "Cold gun." when he didn't know it was, actor (and producer!) not taking it seriously......wow. Absolutely horrific.

Yup. A bit like saying "You look great!" when commenting on somebody's wardrobe, on set.

Yet with firearms it's a deadly weapon and can easily kill. One would think they'd exhibit slightly more responsibility and care, when dealing with such tools. Same as they'd do with explosives and pyrotechnics. But, no, they treated it like any other "prop" on the set, like so much make-up or clothing.

Good way to kill somebody.

Strange, that when handed a firearm known to be capable of firing (not a mere "prop" [fake/disabled] gun), he'd simply grab and go. Didn't validate the ammo in there. Didn't test-fire into the ground to ensure it was still incapable, etc. And with a functioning brain, one would think he'd at least have NEVER aimed it at somebody not specifically prepared to get shot at. Perhaps he was missing one of those as well.

I hope this supposed investigation doesn't get whitewashed because of who's involved. They need to drop the hammer on the stupidities involved and those who commited the negligent acts. Someone's dead because of it.

Watching this morning's news has it that several boxes of
live ammunition was removed from the set by investigators.
They did not say what type of live rounds. 3 pistols were also
removed. It was noted that the armorer removed the cases
that were in the pistol used in the incident. Did not say when
they were removed......Talking head lawyer on same show say's
AB can be charged with involuntary manslaughter under NM
law. Stated as a forth degree felony with up to 18 months in
prison.

As someone mentioned above - he did not take the same precaution he would have if he was to practice a suicide scene.
And I was thinking a while back, would he have done the same thing if he had the gun pointed at his own head??

Time will tell but to me, it smells just like politics. Move along. Nothing to see here.
Reminds me of all the committee meetings and hearings. Lots of jaw flapping and nothing gets done, NADA!!
Like we thought anything would ever get changed.  SS,DD. Thee but not me.

Do guns used in movies not have owners? If they do have owners, who owned the gun that killed the girl?

Apparently, the young (24 year old) second generation, and family legacy, professional armorer Hannah Reed Guttierrez owned the gun, and if typical in her business, hundreds of guns suitable for movies. I’ll soon be crossing the New Mexico state line on the way to Ben Avery for a three day match, pondering that investigation.

I’m a movie goer and always have been. If Ii loved them as much as shooting guns, I’d have built a personal theatre, and I haven’t but it’s close. We lead the world in the creative arts. I have always appreciated the gritty realism of effects and moving quality of the best acting, and it’s not easy. I’m not remotely close avoiding movies, Wal-Mart or Amazon for not catering to the gun trade. That’s just more business, and a lot of it, I’ll do with those prouder to sell to us.

Baldwin speaks his mind, and it’s polar opposite on firearms for one, of what I devote a big chunk of my life to. I’ll go to the mat with opponents of 2A, formidably so, if lucky for 30 years, using reason and life experience the way lawyers have for hundreds of years, with more guns to lose than most should we fail.

Baldwin went to a desolate area to create a late frontier period movie from scratch ground. Theaters are hammered financially these days and I have to think the gray bearded Baldwin could have sat this out. I understand he was handed the large revolver, with the announcement of cold gun, to rehearse a cross-body draw to the camera, while seated in the pew of the church we have seen.

It went horribly wrong, and they all know that. These are real people regardless of their views. Lets consider the consistency of our responses as we know ardent gun advocates, even professional users of firearms, can and have had similar accidents.

Lets say I’m setting around a campfire with two buddies when one hands me a revolver and proclaims it unloaded. I point the revolver at the other friend and pull the trigger only to find out the gun was loaded after all. My gut tells me that I would be setting in a jail cell by now.
