Case lube bath?

One Shot gets a bad rap that mostly comes from guys who don't use it properly.Clean your sizing die and spray a little One Shot in it before you try to size any ammunition.I use MTM loading blocks and I skip every other hole so it holds 25.This gives room around the cases to get them well coated with lube.Shake the can for at least 30 seconds before you use it.I hold the can about 6 inches away and at an angle so I get a little sprayed into the neck.I spray while I'm turning the loading block and work my around the loading block.Don't think it's like other lubes such as Imperial Sizing Die Lube where a very minimal amount is used. One Shot takes several shots. If you feel any excess drag, you need to put more on.I haven't stuck a case with it since I started using it.

I got a good methdology that works with One Shot, but the cases still size fairly hard while using it, especially on the case necks.

I have heard ppl say using too much One Shot can be as bas as not using enuf.

I've used the lyman spray and still have some left.
I do however still roll mine on rcbs case lube pads with the traditional rcbs clear snot lube.

Works good. I have wanting to try the lanolin deal but have yet to make buting the stuff a priority.

Sized about 500 tonite with Hornady One Shot.... followed ALL the instructions...

- Clean sizing die
- Pretreat die with 1 Shot
- Spray liberally including inside case neck
- Let sit 2-3 minutes

All sized real smooth.

Still gonna try the lanolin / alcohol mix. 1-Shot is a lil pricey.

The biggest advantage to One-Shot is that you don't need to clean it off afterward. The drawback (as you discovered) is that technique is pretty crucial to smooth operation.

Any bath type of lubing will involve another step to remove the lube, especially inside the cases (where it can contaminate powder and/or primers.)
You don't wipe the One Shot off after sizing? I don't like putting greasy cases in my rifle's chamber. I wipe it off.

I've never had any problems with it,but it seems like a lot of guys do.I use it for all my bulk 223,mixed brass shot out of who knows what, and it does great.

I use a shallow stainless steel chafing dish to stand up my 223 cases in; it ends up being enough for a load in my tumbler. Then use the Dillon Case Lubricant with the hand pump sprayer; alcohol and lanolin homemade is fine. I set this on a round pub style table outside on the deck so I can walk around it and spray. The firm flat surface of the chafing dish is great unless you like standing a bunch of cases up in a flexible plastic storage case only to have the domino effect. lol. Been there! Of course this is just for the plinking rounds with mixed brass. Anything I load for accuracy (bolt guns) would never see an "expander ball". Those things are concentricity killers and I avoid them like the plague.

Neck sizing only?

Neck sizing only?
F/L sizing. The 223 plinkers I will use the stem and expander ball, but not for a bolt gun. For my 225 win. (and other bolt gun, factory rifles) I use a f/l sizer w/o the stem and then use an expander mandrel for the necks. It may be unnecessary but my concentricity gauge tells me it is. I should mention that I am a novice compared to the vast majority of handloaders on this forum. I do know that all dies are not created equal, because of this process and the conc. guage.

I use LE Wilson chamber type seater dies and get under 0.001 run out.

By expander ball, you mean that part of the depriving stem that goes inside the case neck ?

Yes. I think the expander balls pull the shoulder/neck areas out of concentricity because of the variations of the neck wall thicknesses, resulting in more/less resistance as it is dragged back up and out of the case. I think the shoulder area supports the neck better when using a mandrel being pressed down into the case before being extracted, and that the cases can also be lubed (graphite) more consistently. Taking a fired case and running a neck reamer (Sinclair) in it with some cases having material removed and others with none would concur that once sized this material if not removed would be what would cause the typical expander ball to experience more drag/resistance which induces runout.

When you say you get the 0.001 runout seating the bullet with the chamber seater, does that mean you used a chamber die then a mandrel to expand the necks also? Turning necks?

I use standard sizing dies with the expander ball. I was not smart enough to know that that might be an issue… lol

Then I seat with a chamber type seater. I get about 0.0005 runout, and 0.25 - 0.45" groups at 100 yd.

I am not annealing or sorting or Any other sort of specialized treatment of the cases.

I'm using a factory sporter barrel '64 model that's all but done. I get 5 shot groups that can be covered by a quarter on a regular basis, sometimes a nickle, but that is rare. My best group with this used gun I purchased 4 years ago was this one. Notice the target is upside down, stapled up hastily! .720 es so roughly a 1/2" group. 3/4" group seems to be the norm. One day when I can get a new barrel and a better scope I hope to do much better. At least until then I can learn and improve on consistency the best I can. I have learned that "technique" does make a difference, in all aspects of this hobby.

Did you read the directions on the one-shot can (assuming you're using aerosol - I have never tried the pump bottle stuff)?

It's a dry, non-silicone lubricant. Directions say (and my experience shows) no need to remove.

From ChuckHawks.com:
"Besides the ease of application and trouble free results I have had with the Spray Case Lube, I also like it because there is no need for post-sizing cleanup. This is not true if one uses a wax or cream sizing lube, for the cases must be wiped individually or run through a vibrating case cleaner to remove the residue on them."

Yes, I did. It says to wipe cases after sizing.
