Any luck with 4451?

Just bought a couple pounds of imr 4451. The only other choices were imr 4831 and StaBall 6.5. Hodgdon shows data for 243, 6.5 CM, and 7 Rem mag which is the group I'm using. Anyone have decent luck with it? Talking moa or better out to ~400 here, not BR. Is it a good alternative to H4831, H4350, etc... Or just an also-ran?

Yes it is a great alternative to H4350. I’ve used it in 6x47 Lapua all the way up to .284 Win. In my .260 Ackley, it performs better than H4350. Its a great powder.

I used it in my 6.5x47 under 140 gr Berger VLDs. Burns a little cleaner than h4350. Good results. First time at 400 meters, I shot 1.75 inch 5 shot group. 36 gr Imr 4451 cci 450 pirmer.

I've had some excellent groups with it in 6.5 CM. However, it tends to pressure out before hitting the velocities provided by H4350.

Are you using H4350 data? The published data and quick load values don’t seem to match real world results.

Managed sub MOA with it behind a 168 grain Hornady Amax in my 1903 Springfield.

I have tested it in the Creed and it is really good. It is essentially a replacement for H4350, but was a bit faster in my tests. However, I do not use it for that. I use 58 grains under a Hornady Interlock 150-grain in my 30-06, for 3000 fps. Smucks deer real well and is super accurate. The other powders are very good, also.

I tested 4451 in my 250AI and it worked well, and numbers got even better as I approached max. Also, clean burning and zero copper fouling in the 50 rounds I shot. Reloder 16 gave me better numbers and accuracy

I bought a lb to try in my 6x47 lapua. It worked fine. Was easy to find a load. Since i had 13 lbs of h4350 i soldiered on with 4350. But i knew i had a backup if i needed. I used the rest for practice ammo. I did not take it to 1000 only 100 for load development and practice. As I remember I didn’t quite equal the velocity i was getting with 4350 but the sd was single digit

Yep. I have done limited testing with several powders, just so that I know which powders will work, if the one that I want is unavailable. I have not even been shooting any H4350 lately. My loads are with Re19 in one Creed and Re26 in the other. I don't shoot a lot, but have plenty of each loaded for hunting purposes. I also have a good store of Re 16, H4350 and H4831, which all work well with my Creeds and .260s. I have a bunch of Re17 loads for my .260s. Got to have options!

I agree about options. I found that RL-16 to give me really good numbers with a load I worked up for the newer Berger 109 LRHT. Gave me much better velocities at reasonable pressures.

I've run several test loads for my 6mmCreedmoor using 4451 and 107gr SMK's. Getting just-sub MOA out to 500 yards. Not quite as good as same bullet with H4350. The 4451 seems to run a bit hotter that 4350, but not problems.
