It's getting tough to support the local gunstore

A bunch of "whiners" that failed to plan ahead and now think they should be treated 'special'. The news has said gas prices are gonna' go up because of the refinery shut-downs because of the hurricane. Wonder if they bothered to fill-up before the price increases hit us? Look what happened to the price of hamburger and most other meat when the supply was interrupted and demand increased, and all the other 'wants' at the grocery, too. And now you want a 'deal' in a sellers market... I'd bet lots of the small LGS struggled for the past few years from low sales because of low demand. I'm not saying there should be gouging, but when the price to replace what's on the shelf goes up, so should the price of those items still on the shelf waiting to be sold. Supply and demand, that's how capitalism works. I can't think of any other retail business that doesn't sell at current price when their prices increase.

Honestly, an item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I was buying gold at $430 to $1,100 an ounce. Good buy. However I will not pay $1,900 an ounce. Would I like to keep investing in it? Yes I would. I was also buying gunpowder when it was $15 a pound. Will I buy it at $40 a pound? Yes I will. Because I need it for the sport. Price Gouging???? 8th grade economics explained this in the "Supply and Demand" section.

I expect that you being the world's foremost expert on PMs [among other things] won't need any further explanation.
Nope, but you might. Maybe this introductory paragraph alluded you?

“The gold, silver, platinum and palladium price auctions take place in London on a daily basis. All of these prices are internationally regarded as the pricing mechanism for a variety of precious metal transactions and products.”

You do understand what an auction is, right? That means the price is set by a whole bunch of guys and gals bidding against each other. Thus, the price is not “fixed” it varies based on market fundamentals. And of course everyone has “control” since YOU decide to buy or sell.

This one says it's fixed.

Also did you mean eluded instead of alluded? Yes of course you decide when to buy or to sell and at what price but you're almost always up against spot one way or tuther.

Maybe my lgs will be able to sell some of the ammo he had left from the obama years. He had to buy high just to get it and he keeps it in the back because he paid more than what the retail was up until lately. I dont know if people realize the distributes the local shop buy from raise their prices first. In fact he has told me he just lets the shelves run out on some things just so he wont get accused of gouging, because he would have to buy high and sell high just to get it. Real honest guy, and Id never want to be in the retail gun biz after learning a little about it. I support him any chance I can even when I can buy cheaper.

If all I had to depend on was local people I would have shut down a long time ago.Just about all my sales are from people traveling between Austin,Houston, and College Station.

Alex, I agree with not wanting to be in the gun biz. I ran a small gun shop, part time in the 80`s. I made money but not on the firearms so much. On the accessories and ammo. I had a wholesaler that sent a salesman to the shop. Showed me what deals were available and then delivered my order in 2 days. I doubt that goes on anymore. The saving on the shipping alone helped the profit. I wouldn`t dream of it anymore. Jeff

Can we see a show of hands from those who know someone who is complaining about high prices and lack of availability now at the local shop. Who a year ago was bragging about how they got the same local to come down on a price to get the sale, because he was over stocked and had not made a sale all day?

Supporting the locals in both feast and famine might cost a bit more during both cycles, but seems to help me get what I need when others can’t. Something about being a valued customer.

I've had a couple of rifles shipped to my lgs; bought a couple boxes of shotgun shells, and some 9mm. I'm not a great customer. Mostly I just stop in to check the used inventory, and shoot the breeze. I was there one day about a month ago when a guy walked in and asked for some 9mm. The owner said he was out. After the guy left, he said he had some in the back if I needed it; he just didn't like selling to strangers when there's a shortage.

Unfortunately, I think the big box stores, and on-line retailers will eventually do away with that kind of service. I hope not, but it's headed that way.
