20 Cal. Accuracy

As an accuracy viewpoint from a bench rifle , which 20 cal. has the most accuracy potential in the 20 family .For example with the 22’s the .222Rem. has a well known and deserved reputation so.....what about the twenty’s , all things considered.

From my experience with the 20's, a 20 VT or a 20 PPC would both give very good accuracy at 100 yards and beyond. The Tac 20 is also capable of exceptional accuracy in a good rifle and would work well.

In reality, however, I would not expect any of them to be consistent, all day, one hole shooters at any distance without a lot of luck, practice and muchos $$. And even then, no guarantees.

I have the CZ in 221 FB also, and mine is a tack driver, too, but not a consistent daily one hole shooter.

I've got all thats mentioned and I gotta give the 20BRAI the nod.
My best group ever is .078 with 20BRAI it was at 100 dont know if it was luck or what but I did do it once so I quite right then while I was ahead LOL.

I have experience with many of the twenties and own them AND have shot all of them but probably not in 10 years. I have to say that I have a familiarity with all of the mentioned ones except the 20 ppc. For distance, yes the BR with heavies . For closer (200-250 yds.) the Vartarg is very good and the others 2-350 or ,pushing it maybe 400 depending on your ability in shooting AND reading the wind . What about short range accuracy, pure accuracy?? For example the 222 is not a 1000yd cartridge nor is a 300Win.Mag a good short range choice.

The 20 caliber i want is a 20/ 22tcm. Top speed around 3100- 3200 maybe with 32 grainer's. 13 twist i think is right ?? Zero freebore . it won't heat the barrel or wear out the barrel but it's incredibly accurate in a good set-up.

For purely Benchrest shooting. IDK if I would go w a 20cal. Anything. I use an older Sako 75 re-barreled by Pac-nor 1/11 twist no turn chamber in Tac 20. I use Dakota stamped/Lapua brass. It is no problem to use 223 Lapua brass[after sorting] Reforms easily. My Fav. load is the 39 grain Sierra & Benchmark powder. Out to 500meters. An absolute hammer on groundhogs. My old Fav. the 22-250 rem & 55 grain bullet, See's nearly no hunt time now. MikeinCt

The 20/22tcm ? What is it? Compare it to the Vartarg .
The Vartarg is just a necked down to 20 .221 fireball with a little different shoulder angle.

The 20 TCM is just that. A TCM necked down from 22 to 20. No shoulder changes.
Beautiful factory brass. Got (made) one!! ;)

For real world (registered tournament) bench-rest shooting, using a 20 Cal., anything much over the capacity of Vartarg (221 Fireball), is WAY over kill - especially the PPC and BR capacities, which relative to bore, are HUGE Magnum volume! Yes, they will "shoot" - for a little while (low volume), like rockchuck & coyote shooting. The excess heat generated by rapid firing, will make the best barrel/bullet combination, "go south" - cooling the barrel becomes a BIG deal. I will keep my 20BRs and 204s for critters and nothing over VarTarg for competition performance testing. there has been no mention of 20 practical in the thread. i was tired of the heat and inefficiency (in my mind) of the 204 and thought... 'hmmm, if i could burn 10% less powder...' so i am waiting of a bbl right now. your thoughts?

Nothing wrong with 20 Practical (or 204 Ruger) but I think the OP was thinking “bench rifle”. So, if that includes prairie dog work, then 20 P and 204 Ruger are both awesome choices for bughole potential in volume work. Otherwise...
RGRobinett’s comment pretty much sums it up.

My thoughts were that for “bench rest accuracy “ the Vartarg would be the best of the group but I would not choose it for a match but that is not my intention and also I’m not familiar with everything out there. The twenties are a fantastic hunting round but I wanted to see what the thoughts were on an accuracy round and at the shorter range .If there’s something we’re overlooking, pipe in.

Over the years...I've built & used these as p/dog set ups

20 BR ..204R....20-222.....20 VT...20 PT......

Least fav was the 20 BR......prob my current fav is the 20-222 (was the 9 twist BR barrel)

Second in line would be the 20 VT (was the 204 R barrel)

The 20 caliber is to a 221 Fireball case what a .243 caliber is to a BR case. In my opinion the Vartarg is about the perfect powder capacity for a 20 caliber with 32-35 gr bullets. Optimum efficiency and easy to tune. You get a lot of muscle out of minimum powder consumption and great barrel longevity.
