The reason why more people are not dying is precisely because extraordinary social distancing measures, not seen since World War II and never experienced within the US, are being implemented. The US is still a long way from experiencing the curbs that had to be imposed in Asia and Europe. If you aren't taking this seriously you are a danger to others. If you are over 60 and not taking it seriously you're even more foolish. Maybe the "boomer remover" virus is here just for that reason.

Who gives a crap about the economy right now, most folks just worry about making it through....I guess it's all about money for you ?

You will start hurting when you dont have money for the light bill, when you cant find groceries, when gas disappears, when drinking water is no longer available. Do you think these things magically appear? It requires labor. People to get it done. You will hurt when ur savings are depleted and the bank wants to foreclose because you can no longer go to work to produce income for your family. The economy is what gives you the kind of life that you are so used to. Dont be naive.

Yep. And it is going to suffer a huge whack, quite possibly worse than the 2008-9 financial crisis. China's industrial output contracted 13.5% in the first two months of this year. That's massive. Maybe, just maybe, that's one of the reasons people are concerned about this. There's a health crisis with significant financial repercussions...

You just can't have your cake and eat it too. At this point, the only curb on this thing is social distancing. That comes with significant economic costs. The UK dabbled for awhile with the theory of letting the virus run until the country reached "herd immunity" (basically enough people have contracted the virus and either recovered, and developed some immunity, or died such that transmission struggles). The problem with that is that it is estimated to require upward of 60% of the population to get infected. The cost burden of that in terms of the load on healthcare infrastructure and, more importantly, the tragedy of loss of human life was, however, deemed too high and the UK has recently (last 48 hours) changed tack.

Dont f'ing panic. People hype up this virus. The real issue now is not the virus. It is people. If the virus was as serious as people believe it is, half of china would have died by now. Look at the facts people, not the social media posts. The biggest assumption is that the virus is lethal upon infection. It is a complete lie. People are shutting down the American economy. Soon the world will laugh at us. We are slowly but surely killing one of the world super powers. Come on people. Do not panic. We need the economy to continue operating. The stock market is suffering and china will buy all of our American companies. We need to stay strong and look at facts. People are not dying!!!

I would agree with the excess hype however it is better to error on the side of caution and so far it has been a grand learning experience for a lot of people. The supply chain dependencies in particular. Trump looks like an intellectual giant compared to those who were bad mouthing his MAGA mantra about bringing jobs back to the US. Now everyone who is paying attention understands that he was correct all along. Especially when it comes to pharmaceutical supply chains where China has made noise in their press about cutting us off. In spite of the fact that we developed many of those drugs they are producing. And the issue of preparedness is now much better understood so hopefully what was learned will affect future public policy such that when the next 1918 occurs we will be ahead of it. All and all very good exercise so far and it is not over by any stretch of the imagination. Much more to learn.

The only sticking point is the millennials. They seem to be not adhering to the protocol. I have a solution to that problem. Since they are willing to put the public in danger then it is only fair that the public put them in danger. Re-institute the draft. If they are partying on beaches in south Florida (or anywhere), the public has a right to draft them, shave their heads, stick a gun in their hands and ship them off to the sandbox. Be all you can be dumbfucks, buh bye.

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/20...ding-to-the-greatest-global-panic-in-history/ Has any of you seen this yet? Pretty interesting if you ask me. I will first tell you that I for one never trusts anything the UN says or does. Secondly, I don't ever, under any circumstances, trust what a Muslim says or does. If you think that is being too harsh, understand the Islamic term 'Taqiya' (Lying commanded by the Muslim's book of magic spells, the Holy Koran).

Imagine that the UN and the MEDIA, lying to the people who woulda thunk that!!!!

Jeez, I just spat my breakfast all over my computer

I might have thrown up in my mouth just a little when I wrote it but note, it says "looks". He was correct in his assessment of the problems it can cause but I don't think many had considered the impact of centralizing the supply chain at the source of the worlds major infections.

How many of those that died had rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or another autoimmune disease and were taking immunosuppressing drugs? If on a steroid for any of those diseases, they have a compromised immune system. My guess is many of those elderly that died in Italy and in the Washington nursing home were on those drugs. I'd like to see some investigating reporting on this aspect.

I don't understand why for this and not the flu. It's no more scary than seasonal flu, and I remember the 2018 being pretty rough in my area on 16-35 year olds, specifically on their hearts. This virus has killed 3300 people in a country of 1.3 billion. Life expectancy is longer for a western country like Italy as compared to China, hence a higher ratio of deaths compared to overall population.

This is the correct question. Wash your hands. Take extra precautions if immunocompromised. Simple stuff. Closing everything won't really prevent much, but it will cause panic, as it has. Call me whatever you'd like, but I haven't really changed my day to day routine. Had to drive around today for a while to find a place me and my kid could sit down and eat. I haven't been able to get turkey for my lunches at work, so that's a bummer. If you get sick, Tylenol/Advil for fever, drink as much water as you can. That's really it. Maybe tonic water. Going crazy over this is too much like Pascal's Wager for me.

Inb4 "vaccines". The same people that are clamoring for a vaccine will be the ones that tell me next year they didn't get one because "last time I got the vaccine I caught it".

All the experts are wrong and you are right.

The 'flu has an estimated fatality ratio of about 0.02%. COVID-19 has a fatality ratio estimated to be 1-2%. (No one knows for sure yet. The only statistics we have are the mortality of confirmed cases which in Italy is currently 8.3%.) It is highly contagious. If infection rates reached that of the 'flu millions of people would die, many multiples of those that die from the 'flu. Given there's no vaccine and it is contagious while people aren't symptomatic, the only means to tackle it, so far, are very draconian social distancing requirements. It really is that simple.

Severe social distancing in China/Asia has worked - for now. (I'm not sure how much credibility one should give to recent Chinese statistics.) But Asia is facing a rise in cases (mostly imported) and China is trying to get its workforce remobilized - slowly and again with careful social distancing. (It's estimated that the mortality rate in Wuhan was closer to 6%.)

Italy has an older population. Older people are more likely to die from the virus. Circa 23% of Italians are 65 or older. The figure for the US is circa 16%, less but not massively so. While I don't know for sure I'd be willing to bet that, in general, the Italian population is healthier than the US population. Million of Americans don't have health insurance and are going to be very reluctant to seek medical attention until things are critical.

So, yeah, it sucks. Economically there is likely a good argument for a quick cull of over 65 year olds in any country with a social support network. The reduced medium to long term burden on health and pension systems alone would allow a considerable reallocation of funds to / lower tax take from those sectors of the population that still contribute to the economy. But that's not a humanitarian cost anyone but the most perverted are prepared to bear. Even millennials who joke about this virus being the "boomer remover" don't want to see their grandparents dying on mass.

The reaction of the population, the guidance given by experts and the controls imposed by politicians aren't panic - they're entirely logical and sensible.

PS: As for Tonic water, that's because certain brands contains quinine which is helpful in fighting malaria. I'm not sure it will be particularly effective against COVID-19, particularly if you are elderly.

In this video, (politically incorrect As Always, and that's why I follow him), Pat Condell puts the blame of the spread of Covid-19 virus squarely on the president of china's head. What do you think?
