COVID-19 Map worldwide, with statistics

To globalists (who are everywhere), Trump is a world wide problem.
The demons are definitely pumping gas on this fire, and the damage they're creating is horrible. You'll see

I don't understand why anyone has turned this into anything political. Trump is NOT the problem HERE or ELSEWHERE. This Coronovirus has nothing to do with Trump. For the most part the American People are the problem. For instance, here where I'm at we have had a few confirmed cases of the Virus. The grocery store shelves were emptied in a matter of a day. I stopped by a local gun shop yesterday to pick up a set of scope rings I really needed and this store was jam packed with people buying ammo and guns. I mean I haven't seen this store that packed even a day or two before Christmas. So much for not spreading the virus around........All schools are closed for 3 weeks here. The general population is in a total frenzy!!!!

I know this sounds strange, but I’m glad that people on here are taking this seriously. Among my bird dog friends, I’m a pariah for trying to get them to get past the politics and take action.

The reason people are making this about politics is because of the news media. Google "H1NI of 2009". Look at the total number of cases and total deaths. I was 26 years old in 2009 and not once was anything blown out of proportion. Food didn't fly off the shelves at the local grocery stores, schools and business' did not close. And although we won't know where the numbers will end up for the Coronovirus until this all subsides the numbers for H1N1 are astonishing.

I believe we should take this virus seriously. People will die. Especially the old and already sick. The flu kills tens of thousands of people each year. Typically the old and unhealthy. What's so scary about this virus is people are spreading it around without even knowing they have it. For me, my kids will be at home for the next 3 weeks. My wife works from home and I'm self employed. So I will work when I need to. Our freezers are full of meat from this past hunting season. We won't starve and hopefully none of us get the virus. I feel like we ALL just need to calm down and STAY home!!!!

Politicians don't create viruses. But how they react to the problem is important. Whether, or how, they lead matters a lot. The public is right to challenge or praise their behavior in such times. As for "the media", everyone here talks as if this is a separate, almost foreign party. Who do you think the individuals are that work in the media and who do you think made the US media as polarized as it is today? Sometimes you just get what you ask for.

I don't know about the stats for people in hospice in the US. (Where I come from a hospice isn't an elderly care home but rather a place you go to actually die.) However, as of a few days ago, if you looked at the deaths in Italy for all people over the age of 40, 57% were over 80, another 32% 70-79 and 10% 60-69. So this hits the elderly, as well as people with prior respiratory or high blood pressure issues, particularly hard.

South Korea has by far the best data on this. Here's a summary of the raw data from ~10 days ago published in Business Insider. You can get the current raw data here.

South Korea has had 75 deaths; Italy 1,441. So, unfortunately, a far greater sample set.

More deaths but much less testing. South Korea has tested more than 200,000 people (more than the rest of the world combined), with just 4% being positive for SARS-CoV-2. South Korea is the only country that knows the real denominator in the death rate calculation (deaths/cases). Even in South Korea 89% of the COVID-19 cases are still active, so the current overall death rate estimate of 0.9% (75 deaths/8,162 cases) is certain to increase.

In Italy the numerator is larger but the denominator is unknown -- not nearly enough testing has been done to detect the asymptomatic and less severe cases.

South Korea has a population of ~ 51.5 million folks in an area of just under 39,000 square miles. Also the fastest internet speeds of any country in the world, with nearly half the population in the Seoul capitol area. Ethnic Koreans represent roughly 96% of the population.

Italy by comparison had a population of close to 61 million (6 years ago) in an area about 114,000 square miles with the population unevenly distributed between the north (about 87%) and the south (13%).

Italy, the 5th most visited country* in the world has endured considerable increase in the number of immigrants from the east and south in recent years, among them Chinese.

I've read little about any effort Italy made at containment until after the degree of infection was widespread. Worryingly similar to what we've been doing up until a couple of days ago.

I suspect Italy's medical infrastructure is vastly overwhelmed by the numbers where South Korea's approach to containment has been innovative, with their medical community being one of the most advanced of the modern world.

* United States ranks #3; France tops the list, Spain's next. US in 3rd, then China (!) and Italy for 5th. South Korea ranks 9th among the Asian-Pacific countries.

Italy was very quick to lock down the area where the infection first appeared. Here's some more interesting stats. More than 147 million people in Europe have been told to remain in their homes except for critical movement. Imagine how effective such a ban on movement would be in the US. Luckily the US has better critical care infrastructure - for those with insurance.

I'm sitting here in Daegu, Korea, epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in this country - well, until it recently took off in Seoul. We have been basically staying home for the past six weeks or so - except that I have to work daily. The US Army here in Korea has established screening 'bubbles' on it's bases, and to date we have only had 10 confirmed infections. The local government enacted measures which drastically diminished the spread of the virus. Unfortunately, they were not implemented nationwide, and now Seoul is feeling the effect of that lapse.

My advice - take this seriously, folks! Limit your activities and exposure. Take common-sense precautions. Avoid crowded venues. Wash your hands, and don't touch your face, nose, mouth, or eyes. That's essentially all it takes to stay healthy. If you have flu-like symptoms, see your doctor. Otherwise, stay home!

One thing is for sure. The Western world owes a debt of gratitude to those who died in Italy and awoke the rest of the planet to what was previously dismissed as a "foreign virus."

I hope we'll be able to say the same thing about the response here in three weeks...

As for our critical care infrastructure? A bit less than 300% that of Italy, 34.7/100k population.

I'll turn 71 early next month. Had a (mild) heart attack about this time back in '06, pneumonia when I was 12 (Jack was nose-to-nose with Nikita, Russia'd stationed ICBM's in Cuba), one of my hospital-stay nurses was my math teacher's wife so I didn't lack for homework:(

Guess all that puts me in the high risk profile group.

Reports of cases of COVID-19 100 miles to the east & 100 miles to the northwest have me concerned (for them and for myself) but it's not close to me... yet.

So I'll be keeping outside exposure to a minimum, not venturing far... nor picking my nose either.

Great article in this morning's Financial Times discussing the differences in preparedness in places like Taiwan and South Korea vs the US, in large part due to their traumatic memories and experiences with SARS. Good media.

Toby, read the FT article titled

US and UK hospitals vulnerable to surge in virus cases

Some of the stats in it (beds and doctors per capita) surprised me for sure. (The number of the uninsured, and hence vulnerable, did not.) spclark not sure if you have access to the FT.

Dont f'ing panic. People hype up this virus. The real issue now is not the virus. It is people. If the virus was as serious as people believe it is, half of china would have died by now. Look at the facts people, not the social media posts. The biggest assumption is that the virus is lethal upon infection. It is a complete lie. People are shutting down the American economy. Soon the world will laugh at us. We are slowly but surely killing one of the world super powers. Come on people. Do not panic. We need the economy to continue operating. The stock market is suffering and china will buy all of our American companies. We need to stay strong and look at facts. People are not dying!!!

Who gives a crap about the economy right now, most folks just worry about making it through....I guess it's all about money for you ?
