NSS "Savage Takeoff Barrel"

The Bitterness of Poor Quality Remains Long After the Sweetness of Low Price is Forgotten
Dust is right as always. You get what you pay for. One thing I learned is buy the best once, form a reputable entity, and you won't be sorry. Buy cheap and you will most usually be sorry and will need to buy again.

So, you bought a used barrel and expected a new Match Grade Barrel? I'm hard pressed to quickly add up the number of Criterion barrels from NSS we have used. Great service and advice from James, all the way to High Master at 600 and Expert at 1000. Finally moved on the a Panda setup (Master now at 1000). But shooting the Savage w/Criterion barrels gave me money for ammo, equipment and competitions to improve enough to move to the Panda. NSS are GREAT folks...

I recently purchased my first, and last Savage Takeoff Barrel from Northland Shooters Supply.

Attached you will see two images. These targets were shot at 50yds, so double group size to get MOA.

The image tagged "308 TO 6moa" was fired from a NSS Savage large shank 308 barrel. I called NSS to discuss the results ( 6moa) and they said the group was so large it couldn't possibly be due to their barrel. I disassembled the rifle and reassembled paying extra attention to barrel nut and action screw torques. The results were identical.
I then replaced the NSS barrel with the original 6Creedmoor barrel that came on the rifle in heavily used condition. The target tagged "Cabelas 1moa" was the result.

NSS quoted their return policy and denied any form of restitution. It may be that I am the only NSS customer to ever have this experience. I personally will never give them another try.
How much did the take off barrel cost ? This reminds me of a song , (don't worry-be happy )

Savage will want the whole rig. They do not advocate swapping the barrels. That is just an after effect of their manufacturing process- it wasnt to make it easier to swap barrels

I did bore scope it. Heavily pitted most of length with noticeable copper fouling. This before I mounted it. Savage will not warranty any barrel sold by a third party.

This is when I would have called James. I've found them to be nothing but reasonable and accommodating. I would not have mounted it if it this were the case. Not sure what your goal is here with this thread.

I took this as he called NSS and this was their answer????

The barrel must have been taken off a USED rifle and sold as is. Heavily pitted with copper fouling does not sound new to me, but what do I know. Just like going to the junkyard
and buying an engine, no warranty no returns.OP guy never stated if it was new or used, sometimes you win sometimes you lose with used stuff, but don't trash the seller if
that's what happened.

I'm curious, there's no mention of what was paid, $$$ for this barrel. Could be an indication of what we're working with here. Is this truly a "get what you pay for" scenario. I have never known Jim to misrepresent any products associated with his company. No mention of the load that was shot through this 308 Barrel. Comparing a 308 to a 6 mm without detailed info, Hmmmm.

Too bad it's not a 7 mm. I'd give you $25 for it and rechamber it with my reamer as a fire forming Barrel. Major bargain.

If interested in the $$$, check the NSS site, the takeoff's list for $ 185.00 to $ 225.00

Since the OP said the OME barrel was a 6 CM , which means he's right handed, so I'll leave him and you'll to sort this out.

I'm amazed that you would be calling NSS out on this. You bought a Savage barrel from them, they didn't make it. Your Cabela's barrel is also Savage made. You bought a non warrantied barrel from the clearance section and you want NSS to be responsible? Put the responsibility where it belongs, on the buyer and Savage.

Thats pretty cryptic but if he sends that barrel back to savage you know theyre just going to laugh. It would be like sending a trigger back to remington. They want the whole rig since a barrel is not a user servicable part, and this barrel is not the barrel that came with that serial number action- you fiddle with it savage wont assume anymore responsibility. Break the seal on a remington trigger adjustment screw and youll get a new trigger and a bill even if it was sent in for a broken stock

So, you put a junk barrel on an action and expected a miracle, that's good. I'll have to try that sometime.

The point of the thread is that it was "represented to be" a new barrel. The heavily pitted 6Creedmoor barrel looked the same through a borescope but shoots great.
I always appreciate the sarcasm of a smarta$$.
