ELR Central World Record Event.

Before clamoring for a sanctioning body (or bodies), which I'm in favor of, take a step back. This "discipline" is very new and still evolving. We're going to continue to see people advance the course of fire and equipment until something hits that is worth repeating, at which point, you can safely say there is (or will be) a "sanctioning body".

It's so expensive and hard to shoot (it requires, well, an ELR range, and target handling isn't exactly what we're used to in BR or high power), that it's going to be inherently different than anything shot competitively today. Just let it evolve and see where it goes. I personally don't give a hoot about world records, but it is very good to have a standard set of rules just to keep matches and equipment consistent. One of the bigger challenges is keeping the price of the equipment down to the point where more than handful of die hards are willing to pay for it.

Some of the comments here had me wondering, how cool would it be to make one mile benchrest a thing? That's very different than what the ELR matches have been to date, but would be interesting in its own right. Just not sure where you'd shoot such a match, but adapting the rules to the distance wouldn't be a huge challenge.

I can't help but think that there are different mindsets attracted to this. The PRS and benchrest guys are goign to see ELR very differently, which makes me wonder if ultimately, we wind up with a few ways to do it. A few things rattling around my head:

- PRS-style ELR matches with a varied course of fire and all manner of "practical" constraints applied to the rifles. This seems to be what's happening currently, sort of.
- An extension of long range benchrest, just bigger heavier guns, and longer ranges.
- 1200-1500 yard F class. (Barely counts as ELR, but seems like fun - ranges are a huge problem currently)
- ELR steel plates - think prone silhouette at extended ranges, but a a standard course of fire. Ring/knock over the plate, and get a point.
- .308/.223 only ELR class? Might be more practical for a lot of guys who don't want to spend a fortune or have access to a 3000 yard range.
- something else entirely

That's already been done. They held them regularly in Ohio and some at Iowa. At Ohio it was a few yards shy of one mile. 5 shot groups for group and score. Matt

So I know we keep saying cold bore.... but has anyone ever thought of making something that "preheats"
the barrel? We used tire heaters in motorcycle and car racing, so I wonder if something similar would work for barrels and be allowed since you could easily heat a barrel before getting to the line.... crazy idea.

It wouldn't be impossible. We have chamber flags that cool the barrels. The question is how to evenly heat the entire barrel, with a device that stays inside the weight limit.

It's a myth.

I have no problems tracking cold bores. 95% of the time they go in the same spot as the rest following it.

That 5% of the time when they go elsewhere is when I just cleaned the barrel aggressively. Or haven't cleaned it in a long time, stored it for 6+ months and shot it that way.

Here in Aus , I helped a buddy win a National Queen’s Prize shoot using
heat packs to preheat the rifle . We had tuned it in 25 deg Celsius
conditions , but the day of the comp was 5 deg Celsius . Waited til the
very last moment to get the rifle out of the bag and set up . ‘ Warm bore’
shot was in the 10 ring : a lot of competitors were cleaning barrels and
wondering wtf , why is my rifle not shooting ....

Back on topic , congratulations to ELR Central for stepping up to lead the
way in this comp , and set some tough , no bullshit rules . Like many field
shooters , I’m tired of the spray and pray guys chucking lead all day and
getting one hit and claiming some record . These rules will most certainly
sort out who has their shit together , and those that do not ....

Damn that’s an ugly scorecard ... Theres some serious talent in that list .
Anyone still complaining about the validity and difficulty of the rules now ?
Thanks for posting , Desert Fox .

Makes me want a 375 cheytac or varient even more.. Been kicking around the idea.. just cant come up with a feasible excuse for anything bigger than 338 lapua...
