ELR Central World Record Event.

This isnt that hard!!!! You pay your entry, you shoot 3 rounds from your equipment which meets their rules, if all 3 make contact on the 36 inch target you are the record holder until someone does it at a further distance. If you dont like their rules, go shoot benchrest. They are just trying to establish some sport to it instead of every tom, dick, and harry lobbing hundreds of bullets at an 18 wheeler and claiming to have a record

I read the rules and have 2 questions:

WTF is a "heavy rail gun"?

And how do you get an accurate group size measure on a painted steel plate?

----------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.appliedballisticsllc.com/Downloads/ELR CENTRAL WORLD RECORD EVENT.pdf

1. The World Record will be 3 out of 3 direct impacts on a 36-inch square plate
with no practice shots or sighters.
2. One rifle per shooter for both attempts. Two shooters cannot share one rifle.
3. Shooters will not shoot their rifles within 4 hours of this ELR World Record
attempt; except for a 100-yard confirm zero.
4. No limit on caliber, cartridge or bullet. No restriction on optics or aiming
devices.
5. Rifle weight limit of 50 pounds including anything attached to the rifle (optics,
bipod, sling, etc.) No heavy Rail Guns or bolted down shooting systems.
6. Shooters may have one spotter, and the shooter and spotter must stay as a
team. Spotters can work with only one shooter for the day.
7. Shooters are permitted to shoot and spot only once in a 4 hour period. A
shooter from the first relay can spot for his spotter in the second relay so that
both can shoot. Shooter and spotter cannot shoot in the same relay.
8. There must be a minimum of 4 hours before shooters can attempt another World
Record. For example, once in the morning, once in the afternoon.
9. No more than two (2) World Record attempts in one day.
10. The target will be 36 inches square. If there are hits on the target and
there is a way to mark them on the monitor, it will be at the discretion of the
Match Director to decide when the target should be re-painted.
I guess I'd be concerned with just hitting that steel plate to begin with. I'll worry about the measuring part once that's achieved.

@atombomb
I to am glad to see new ELR venue. But have to question why these rules are so "wide open" to certain aspects (any sighting device, any bullet, etc.,) but then so restrictive on others (equipment, rest, rifle weight, etc.). Especially when there is vast amounts of LR shooters who are setup and shoot off rests instead of bi-pods. As well as many who have LR rifles that weight more then 50lbs.

That is why I stated: sure hope those rules are not what becomes a standard or promoted as a standard.
And why they seem discriminating to me.

Because like anyone promoting a new event, they are creating a different type of rules to interest a market. Yes, heaven forbid I'd say we are marketing and event or product/s to people, that's what all event promoters, manufacturers and people who want to compete against other do. This is not pointed at Dmoran, so don't take it that way. I personally am glad there is a 50lb weight limit, to me, more than that is an artillery piece. I'm glad benchrest guys can use super precise and stable rests, but I like the idea of shooting off a more crude bipod or tripod... but there are venues for shooting this way already. So here is something new, albeit imperfect, but every organization rewrites some rules, so none have started without controversy or the perfect plan. Any sport or organization that has limits on equipment is not necessarily discriminating, they are defining what they feel are the acceptable methods to participate or compete for their contests. Several ELR matches or events have taken place just in the last few years alone. Let's see which one catches on and people support. I'm just glad people keep pushing the limits of equipment in all arenas, it benefits us all.

Guess you haven't payed attention to how sophisticated some of the bipods + tripods being used are. Or how some of the rifles are built in unity of them. Far from crude is how I see them....
But maybe there part of the "marketing" plan (like you talk of) and why the very popular and commonly used sand bag rests, like are used in FClass, BR, Silhouette, and other disciplines, are being shunned upon.

Added later:
Maybe selfish on my part here, but primarily was looking at the rules for myself. And since I already have 3 LR rifle/setups that I use in other LR disciplines, and have shot them out to 130-MOA per the caliber. Feel they are capable of further and extended distances yet, and could chamber up barrels, to go extended distances, for ELR type matches. But after reading these ELR Central rules that are being promoted, see that my rifle/setups would not comply.

Not going to nitpick over rules. Like any other type of competitive shooting there will be those who test the boundaries and I am sure the ELR Central rules will evolve to a standard everyone will accept. I applaud these guys for their pioneering effort to standardize a new shooting discipline.

This could get interesting, there are a lot of guys who have a lot of interest in cold bore long range shooting and the challenges that brings, I think your seeing those guys wanting to bring something tangible and valid to shooting other than just bouncing bullets of rocks, I find it very interesting, a lot of us have been doing it a long time but not really shooting for a group but a single cold bore round in a hunting or practice situation, this is the next step, make it a competition format.

It is discriminating else we would not have room for all the Creedmores.....Even though the ELR community may not have expressed it, they are there to encourage the development of small arms capability that might be of use to our military community. This was not ideal for me because my big one was for bench and weighed 65 lbs. I am having it rebuilt to be fired off the bipod (and ground) so I can shoot with these crazies! I will likely drop 30 lbs off my old BR50 leaded stock. The efforts of people like this have benefitted the military capabilities as they probably have spent more on development of capabilities that the services. Hell, our combined money spent probably is more that the military wants to spend on it because it is less sexy than buying B2's and Subs.

Its also going to require more expensive gear than about any shooting sport. This 3 for 3 rule makes it similar to BR in that its now a sport of excellence. One error, pack up and go home.
The 3 for 3 on 1-MOA targets is what is intriguing to me, that will demand precision to all aspects.
Also believe other LR FClass & BR shooters would be to, but probably not as likely to, if our rifles/setups are not legal to the rules.

No need to make this complicated. ELRC rules are perfect, simple and hard to fuck up.

This is simple sniper discipline. Not benchrest/F-class ELR.

I love the cold bore hit idea very much. It makes the record shots that much harder and will shorten the record distances at the beginning for the most part.

Eventually there will most likely be different classes. But it has to start somewhere simple.

Lets look at PRS....,

It was simple at the beginning, now it's a whole lot more to it if you wanna be competitive. And different classes too.

Love or hate the current rules, things will progress. Remember we all crawled before we learned to walk.

I'm interested in this format, and yes, I do think they need to standardize a format and have
a sanctioning body. I also think the concept is in it's infancy and will grow and refine as it grows in interest. Plate size has already been addressed I believe. Caliber class, distances? I just hope it doesn't go all PMS. I am lucky to have access to 2600 yards close
to my place and chose a caliber to run there. 338LM Imp. I toyed with a Big Boy but, realistically don't have access to test and run longer. (how many do?) I'm excited to see the sport grow. Alex, if you do a match up North, I'll do it.. My rig should be done in a couple of
weeks. gunna start thowing big lead soon!

I am guessing this new record will be sub 2000 yards. 3 out of 3 makes this way cooler than the keep shooting until you accidentally hit some huge target deal IMO.
The results on THE day will be determined by weather conditions. There will be very proficient shooters at that event. Shooters that have shot beyond a mile in various conditions that will be prepared for range and conditions to a certain extent. Many will be kidding themselves to even think they can play at that range let alone hit a 3'x3' steel plate. The 3/3 cold bore is another one of the things guaranteed to make most shooters fail at making all 3 shots count. I'd love to attend but would be kidding myself if I thought I could hit it once let alone 3 times. 1500 yards is one thing. Beyond 2000 is completely another story. Good luck, I would certainly like to hear your results from this event.

So us guys on the east coast need a place to practice....suggestions for Nc, Sc, Va, Ga, or Tn? Id love to get involved, just no where to practice around here.

Shoot a smaller caliber to a 50-MOA or further distance, is good practice and not as much distance needed to do it in. @birddog and those guys at the "Dasher Dome" get out pretty far. There in TN if not mistaken.

They are about six hours from me. I may have to message them and see what it takes for a north carolina boy to get to come play. Lol

I like the fact that a guy will have to have his whole system wired tight, you aren't just going to show up and be able to tune your ballistics on site. It'll favor guys who have worn out barrels shooting cold bore targets at what ever range they can get lasered, then you'll have to put two more on target, dig it a LOT!!

this is based on the KISS Principle.

A stock, out of the box Savage SS 338 LM can be competitive out to 2000yards with a good scope, with practice.
Allow a rest, and everybody will need a $1500+ SEB rest.
The 36" square steel target is a very simple thing to score, hit or miss.
The record is easy, scores almost like the Ko2M.
As the program advances, just increase the distance.

The only thing I would change is the weight limit. Shooter has to be able to hold the rifle over his head and count to fifteen out loud (one one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand, etc) in less than a minute.
To me, an important part of this is reasonable weight limits.

Your right, forgot that the SEB Bipod & Joy-Pod are a little cheaper.... lol
Think the Tier One Carbon and the Dolphin's maybe to, but all are more then my rests.
Thinking some of those Tripods may cost a little extra.
