One of us ought to buy a vowel. Or something.

Recompense, ummm, is that going to hurt?

Snert, shit now you tell me. I would have taken taken your advise. I was having so much fun with the 460 Hornet Improved that when I ran out of paper caps I just had to keep going. When out of ammo the match head idea was just too inspiring to leave it alone. I think it might have worked except next time I would use safety tips. Anyways just as you predicted I had a little wet super glue on my finger, and not realizing it a match head got stuck. You know how you flail your hand around when realize somethings wrong and stuck to it?? Well bad idea with stryke anywhere matches. Don't ask. At least the one finger I type with is ok.

Reading these last few threads, has pointed out that GREAT MINDS Think alike, and that any problem is in the reach of Solution, you primer discussion and innovations a pure genius, you have saved me a lot of brass , thank you !!
But I feel that I should point out that accuracy AND safety are utmost !
SWD first let me say welcome! You well have a learning experience like no other, the expertise here is legendary,
As snert pointed out match heads are not well regulated or particularly reliable, now I know its can be intimidating conversing with the likes of snert, stork ,MR majestic . I have been in awe myself !!
But please a little more thought before you post !!
Did you say you only 25 grn in a 223 you should check out some of my loading techniques I get 38ish depending on humidity

Recompense: to obliviate, or to make right. so all is good, as we say in NY

I am trying to think of who should buy a vowel and which one...sAwd....nah...jAlt...nah...

Hey SWD, as long as you did not slam your burning fingers into your mouth like I do when I hit my thumb. Blistered tongue makes it hard to pronounce words. especially words that come out after blistering your tongue. Hope you r e c o v e r y o u r t y p i n g f i n g e r s s o o n.

Been trying to prime with percussion caps. Need help !
Technique: hold brass in hand wrap around fashion ,balance cap over primer pocket, tap with hammer, I've only got one to seat , didn't know they went of with such a force and heat, talk about blistering, first one blew shell out of my hand and wad punched the top of my foot, so learn as you go
Any thoughts come to mind, thanks in advance

Snert, my tongue is ok although burnt match heads and fingernails leave a bad taste in your mouth. Don't ask.

That being said I did manage to locate 7 more musket caps in a buddies garage. I think I'll take the 460 Hornet Improved out for some varminting this weekend. It seems to shoot real well. I got great groups on a large rock at 37 paces. Zero is good and ready to go.

I went over to the cast booshits site, figuring some one there would have a musket capping tome, but alas, all I found was some guy going by the name of Red Green, and he seemed not too stable. Too much lead sniffin I suspect. So here is my idea, off the cuff. (I usually don't offer such off the cuff ideas, but you guys are smart so if you see any issues, feel free to point them out). I am thinking that the issue is not the hammer or holder, but the OD of the cap vs the ID of the fired case primer pocket. so one could try a smaller brand. I think Privi makes caps, and since they are imported, likely they are smaller. You also might try upping your charge a bit on the round before, to open that pocket a smidge? Or you could ream the primer pocket. A cordless drill and a 1/4 drill bit should be about right. Just watch your depth. Don't want to go too deep, and then get a light musket cap strike. If that be the case then you would need to bush your firing pin hole and extend the firing pin. Doing that brings us back to the super glue problems we already identified. Best avoided.
I suggest you seat using a table top. yep. Stand the musket cap up on the table. Lower the case over it. Using a 1x4 on flat, lay it atop the case. smak with a rubber mallet (less jarring). If you place several empty cans between your belly and the case, no worries about errant shrapnel if one goes off. The can will catch it. (This of course will NOT work for Mr. M, due to his endowed rifle rest/beer holder keeping him from being able to reach around and hold the case and not knock over the empties, but for the rest of us it is a good bet).

Remember, goggles and an oven mitt are standard fare for priming. Surprised you missed that in your introductory study of handloading.

Are you using super glue? Try a little less duck tape and let the rims expand more. It helps a lot. My 11 year old daughter refused to help me any more until I figured that one out. Don't ask.

I love my 460 Hornet Lott Improved. Is yours built on a Martini or did you go with the 581 conversion? I used the 581. had a tough time getting a reamer, but in the end it worked out. I am getting groups similar to yours, though I use old appliances for my target sight in. More common here in the east than rocks.

I have been thinking. Maybe we should form a consortium of like minded pioneers in the handloading world, say some of the guys here, and start a special forum section. Kinda like "Click and Clack" of the automotive world. we could answer questions posed by folks who own reloading equipment but are not as deeply in tune with how things work as we are. We could become the next "dear Abbey" (ya, it was two people, but we would be better, cause we are more, and more smart too) for the shooting world. I think we have a lot to offer. Ya think it would gain traction?

Shoe, I never even thought of that. I was just in it for the altuism of helping my fellow shooters make the jump into more accurate shooting. But you do raise interesting prospects. we might have to see who started this thread and pay a small fee, since I think early on we might have slightly derailed it, but in a good way of course...but after that I think you should be in charge of taking care of the various endorements etc, since I think you are off-shore, so to speak and maybe the tax situation is better when we can bath everything in a bit of salt water, eh?

But maybe we better keep this to ourselves and not let the great unwashed in on it too much?

wondering where Mr M went? And Hog? Seems that some of the great minds are off cooking up something. I thought since Jammie was such a shooter we would see some posts, but alas, no wisdom. Just saying I am missing the conflageration of great minds working together, pouring out the brainstorms and looking for more better ways. So the invite is on...Mr M? Did you drop your vodka or are ya with us?

Shoe I appreciate your sediments, but your praise is misconstrued. All shooters I know are really good guys and share wisdom with no thought of gain or profit. While some may blow a horn now and then, it is all in the interest of the sport and in the end they are just like me, all true istic. Just like you, slathering praise where it is undeserved. But thanks anyhow. Made my day.
