.223 Whitetail bullet

Don't know if you get to see a grizzly very often but the ones we run into I don't think I'd really want to tackle one with a 223.
They do however work well for other game, we shoot a pile of elk on cull hunts and we get kids all the time, we were having issues with them struggling with high power rifles and shot placement so we set up a 223 and that solved our shot placement issues with young people, many times this was their first big game animal so we want the experience to be awesome for them so their on a good track. My daughter shot her first mule deer buck last year with a 223 and it cleaned his clock at 302 yards, she got a couple inches forward and broke both shoulders and messed him up, very, very clean kill.
What bullet was used?

IMO the 224 bullet is fine for deer and generally any size deer with a well placed bullet. Beyond that, I'm not with killing bigger animals with that light constructed bullet. Certainly not an elk. I knew of a guy hit an elk with a 140 ballistic tip bullet from a 7 mag in the shoulder and track it for 2 days. Never found it. 2 weeks later, the rancher found it dead. Never made it completely into the vitals. Think maybe some fragments hit lung but not enough to quickly kill him. Yes he was an idiot using that bullet. He was hunting another species and asked if he could harvest an elk while on that hunt. He only had 140 BTs. The shot was reasonably close for a 7mag. Deer or antelope maybe, elk no go.

Ok. before everyone says that a .223 is too small for deer, I don't want to hear it.

So my son hunts with a .223 ruger american with a 1:8 twist. We are using 55 gr hornady spire points with great success, but i feel like i want to go heavier.

So what do you recommend? I reload and would like to keep recoil at a minimum. I was thinking like a 75 gr something? Or maybe the barnes line? Thoughts?
You don't need those expensive bullets. Use 70gr speer semi spitzer. Have killed hundreds with em. Instant death, and total penetration. They shoot great in slow twist barrels, and do their job unfailingly.

I like to use the 65gr Sierra Gameking and the 70gr Speer Soft Point in my 223's. Never had a deer get away from me yet with them. I don't usually hunt deer with a 223,but they do work pretty well with good bullet placement with these two bullets.
