which whitetail bullet for 223? HELLLLP !!!

I just don't understand the negative responses to hunting deer with a 223Rem. Deer aren't very hard to kill. With the inherent accuracy potential of most 223 bolt rifles these days and shot placement being key in ANY caliber, I say a partition will most surely get the job done. Hit a deer with a neck shot and I think they won't get far. Deer are no harder to kill than a man and many a man has been put in the ground with a 5.56 bullet. I have seen guys gut shoot deer with 300 mags and lose the animal. At 100 yds putting a Nosler partition through a deer's eyeball would be easy with my old model 70 in 223. A quick and deadly neck shot even easier.

What ever bullet you choose the rate of twist needs to support the weight and length of the projectile.A 60 grain Nosler will shoot in a 9 twist barrel. A 70 Swift Scirocco will require at least an 8 twist barrel.

I have killed a number of deer with a .233 Remington. Shot placement is key. Using the analogy that a .223 will kill a man is not a good one. In war it take one man to tag a soldier and leave him. In war it takes at least 8 men to get a wounded soldier medivacced out. I have always been told a good deer round will have 400 foot pounds of energy at the range of impact.

Can't believe this thread is still rolling. If you have a .223 rifle that will shoot 5-shot .75" groups @ 300 yards (how about some pictures for proof?), then you should be able to ethically kill small/medium deer at 1/2 that range with the right bullet and its placement.
But, it sounds like you should just sell that .223 and buy a $300 .243 - and practice shooting.

hey guys,
in a delima, seems ive tried ALMOST every 223 bullet and just cant find " the one"
killed 5 deer and 9 hogs just this last yr using different bullets in the ar-223 , a 75 gr hornady bthp , 62 gr barnes tsx, 65 gr sierra,55 gr gmx hp, and nosler 64 gr bonded. all did the job and i was really hoping the heavier 75 gr hornady bthp was the majic pill,NOT!
I WANT A BULLET THAT WILL REALLY EXPAND TO OPEN UP WOUND CHANNEL BUT BE TOUGH ENOUGH TO PENETRATE A BIG HOG OR 150 LB GA DEER. is there such a bullet?
shot placement will always be the key but the whole gun was bought for my 7 yr old 43lb string bean grandson. HELP
DOES ANYBODY KNOW if the hornady 75 gr match bthp will expand? it didnt on a deer but i just shot 8 in of pressed books taped togather and it made the biggest hole of all i tested.
If you have 1-7 twist the 70gr Barnes TSX
If you have 1-8 to 1-9 twist the 62gr Barnes TTX
the 64gr Win Power Point is a great cheap bullet for deer and hogs

Shoot the deer in the brain. Any accurate bullet from your AR will lay a deer down. Hunt from a place with a steady rest.

We don't have any Whitetail deer in Australia but I've shot a lot of Chital for meat over the years using a .223. I use the Sierra #1365 Gameking 55 Grain SBT. These three does were taken in quick succession with a CZ527 using the Sierra bullet at about 150 yards. Two of the shots were not that well placed as can be seen but the animals still only ran about 50 yards before going over. I've also taken a lot of medium sized pigs with this same load as has my teenage son. The bullet seems much harder than other 55 grain SBTs and penetrates much better than say a Hornady 55 Grain SP. I don't like using the Sierra on feral cats, dingoes or foxes as they often pencil through so they are definately a tougher construction that some others. Best thing about them is they are cheap and plentiful here.

I load 62 partitions for my dad's 223. Great bullet for whitetail. I'd also recommend the 62 Barnes. Barnes will almost always pass thru and leave good blood trails.
