James, your load sure looked good on the 800 yard EGG Challenge![]()
Folks,
We're starting on a new Cartridge Guide--this one for the 300WSM and 7WSM. If you've seen any of our previous Cartridge Guides, you'll know we try to make them the definitive resource on the web for that particular chambering. It's a format that has been very popular with readers--our .308 Guide has received 195,000 pageviews.
Creating a new Cartridge Guide is a big job--it can easily involve 100+ man-hours of work. So we need your help. Also having proven load data from real shooters benefits everyone who eventually reads the article.
For the 300WSM guide we need shooter input regarding:
1. Favorite Accuracy Loads
2. Favorite Hunting Loads
,for #1 & #2 we need powder, charge weight, bullet, primer, brass mfg., velocity, seating depth or OAL, recommended twist, and one or two sentences commenting about the load. Include your barrel type and twist rate if possible.)
3. Recommended Bullets.
Because the 300WSM caliber is used both for long-range target use and hunting at all distances, we need to cover a wide selection of bullets. We're especially interested in comparisons among the High-BC match bullets, and learning about the real-world performance of hunting bullets of various weights/construction.
4. Reloading Tips.
If you have developed any special loading practices that work real well with the 300WSM or 7mm WSM, let us know. We will also cover the 270WSM necked up to 7mm, as this is used by many long-range shooters. We are very interested in knowing what kind of brass prep you've found to work best, both with Winchester and Norma brass.
5. Die and Tool Recommendations.
We've heard some good things about custom dies from Hornady and Warner Tool, and the Lee Collet dies work well for some guys. Let us know your die preferences and what sizing methods work best.
6. Brass.
We want to hear your experiences using both Winchester and Norma Brass.
7. Gun of the Week.
We're looking for a 300 WSM long-range target rifle to feature.
I'm looking for a good load for shooting steel , 155 grain only , best bc I can find is Sierra 155 TMK . 519 . I have a 24 " 10 twist . I want something that I can see my hits in the scope , this gun jumps on the bipod sorry it's a 30 wsm , will a different bipod make any difference have a Harris BR on it , do I need a wider standing one? Thanks Mark
300 wsm Stiller TAC action, rock creek 28 inch barrel 1 in 10 twist. Jewel trigger and 32 power nxs Nightforce. Shooting suppressed.
215 target vdl Bergers loaded with 57.5 grains of h4350 with federal 215 primed Norma brass loaded at 17 thou. This is my 1000 yrd load and will usually hold half moa groups
210 target Berger loaded with 60.0 grains of h4350. Norma case fed. 215 primer loaded at 15 thou. Shoots good as well
220 Sierra matchkings loaded with 57.0 grains of h4350 in a fed 215 primed Norma case loaded at 12 thou. is my plunker load. These shoot decent and I have a bunch of them I bought from sal on the classifieds
I’m using h4350 because of the throat of my rifle. Any matchkings or non vdl bullet I load compresses h4831 quickly
Velocities?
I'm looking hard at 300 WSM for 1 mile. Looks like it may just cut the mustard at 1760 with a 215 hybrid humming at 2900...just wondering if that's a realistic expectation
If your looking at a one mile gun I may look into a 338 edge or 338 norma mag, something in that area, don't get me wrong the 300 wsm will definitely get there. Your looking at around 1140 fps at a mile with the 300 wsm with the 215 bergers at 2900 fps. For me personally that fps is Borderline. No doubt it will work but if it were me I'd prob go with a 338 or 375 cal round if one mile is it's sole purpose
Thanks Mach. I think for the extra few hundred yards the WSM would afford me over the 6.5, that "diminishing returns" would be received if I went that route.
In other words, why stop at a mile when one can go further!
