Your opinion: Best Carbon Remover

Removing carbon fouling. Well, this should be accompanied with a bore scope picture that would give a particular situation. For instance, a 223 fired 20 times is going to differ from a 308 fired in several 60 shot strings, and this will differ from a 7 STW fired 30 times.

Good bronze bristle brushes do the heavy lifting. Then JB or an easier to use product called Montana Extreme Copper cream that does the same thing. When the JB and Copper Cream are not up to the Job, then the Flitz Bore cleaner gets the job done in spades. Those that have ears, Let them hear!

Many thanks to ubanrifleman for turning me onto the Flitz Bore cleaner, I ordered 10 bottles it works so well. Hawkeye and Teslong do no tell a lie!

On a test, CLR etched my stainless sink, your sink maybe different than mine.

I’m glad that some are realizing good results with CLR, but it did virtually nothing in my barrels to remove carbon fouling. Perhaps due to the type/brand of powder and the amount of fouling? I’m a fan of Bore Tech products.

KG1 ON one side & #9 on the other side ...
Ford is better than Chevy or Dodge.
Brunettes are better than Blonds but they have a tendency to take homes and Ford's & put #9 & kg1 in coffee ....

Immediately after range session or match (while barrel is still warm), I put 3 or 4 soaking wet patches with a regular solvent through the bore. Then I put 2-3 soaking wet patches with carb out. Then I apply wipe out foam once, wait 15 minutes and apply the foam a second time. Then I patch out 3-5 hours later.

For most of my barrels this is all that is required. There is no hard carbon build-up. Round count between this process is typically 60-70.

Obviously that may not work for a multi-day match. But for the typical shooting that most people do this seems to work very well with both button rifled and cut rifled barrels.

Forum Boss,
What would be your recommended procedure for cleaning a neglected, carbon fouled barrel? Acquired a second-hand rifle and need to baseline clean it. I see no point in shooting it or trying to develop a load with it carbon fouled like it is.

Thank you for your time.

Whatever works for you. Even the experts don't agree on something as simple as barrel cleaning.

In my opinion in your case I would run a few patches of c4 through it and let it soak a while. Then i would take a worn brush and wrap a patch soaked In c4 and smear it with losso and stroke the whole bore. Be nice to monitor your progress with a bore scope. Then patch it out really well with boretech eliminator. Get all the losso out.

Put me down on the CLR bandwagon too. It turns hard carbon soft and wipes away. Doesn't do anything to copper, you'll see that left in the barrel. If you're curious, try it. A good friend and AS forum member did some testing a while back soaking different steel in it for different lengths of time. I am not worried about it eating barrels.

I purchase 1.450 barrels for $450 each. Another $250 to chamber and another $200 to glue into a block. I guess I’m an idiot because I use Flitz to remove carbon in my $1000 barrels. Has not let my down yet. I have one that has over 3000 rounds through it. Maybe I should switch to drain cleaner.

At least you know. ;)
He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not is a fool, shun him. :D

I just happen to use what works for me. I have absolutely no reason to change. I know of others who use gasoline additive to do the same thing. GM top engine cleaner also works just fine. It’s all about what one is comfortable with. There is no magic concoction on the market today. Trial and error.

Over the years I have known more competitors that have destroyed their quality barrels with improper cleaning techniques, bore guides and rods than what they put on their patches.

We have tested it on just about every barrel made and it did nothing but remove carbon from them. Blueing on a barrel is a different matter so dont spill it

How would you know this as fact ?

Super old thread I know, but just another mention for CLR.

I still love my boretech products, and will continue to use them, but CLR is without a doubt the best carbon remover I've ever used. It's orders of magnitude better than any traditional bore cleaner I've ever tried.

Borescope verified. You can legitimately patch out hard carbon in 3-4 patches; minimal to no brushing needed.

Try it on a shot out barrel if you don't believe all the talk.

Edit: I am careful as hell with its use. I don't want that stuff on my stocks/actions.

So now, I have to ask Flitz Multi-Purpose Polish and Cleaner or Flitz Gun Bore Cleaner?

And what is your Technique ?

Thanks,
