In short range benchrest ( group ) we are probably more anal about a clean barrel than other disciplines and probably over do it to be honest but we just dont want to take that chance that the bore is degradating accuracy. For us ( when we have a good shooting fresh barrel ) we clean after every target. When our barrels are clean they shoot better. When we re-up for a new one most folks would consider it just broken in. A ppc barrel for most folks away from competition is considered accurate worthy with 4 - 5000 rounds but we rarely let it get past 1500. At that point cleaning the way we do would hurt accuracy to an extent for it needs some fouling. Even with our cleaning regimen - carbon buildup is still an issue but what ive found to be a blessing is to use the caliber specefic bore mop with flitz bore cleaner with just a few short strokes at the area you have previously found with a reversed direction pull on a flemsy nylon brush in an oiled bore.
