Windy PD hunting in MT

When did ND become a PD mecca? I spent my first 19 yrs there and Teddy's park only place I ever saw one.

I don't think it ever did. They are just everywhere. When you stop at a café for coffee. Just ask someone. You will leave the place with about 10+ names and a few dozen town locations. Just remember to keep great notes. You will get more invitations to towns that stink than are ok. On occasion you will get permission to a town that is a real 1,000rd a day place.

Always thank them when you are done. I do not send Christmas Cards to any of my family. I do however send out quite a few to the people who let me shoot PD on their land.

I have been upgrading my book to a real binder with a book in it. I keep names of everyone I have ever talked to or called. Their info contains everything I know about them. Basic information like names of family members, birthdates and other important info about them. Call times is very important. There is no reason to call at 7pm if they never answer after 2pm.

While I never like to do the work for access stuff. I do offer my assistance. Farmers and ranchers are very proud. So the work does not come but the calls to remove living problems do come from time to time. I have played calving over watch many nights.

In western ND only, primarily on the "Little Missouri Grasslands" and the "Badlands".

There are no prairie-dogs in the eastern 2/3 of the state.
Unless one considers gofers prairie-dogs...lol

There's a couple prairie dog towns southeast of Sidney, Montana just over the western North Dakota border. I used to shoot there quite a bit. But so did everyone else. Lucky if you could get 5 shots before they got smart and all went underground for 30-45 minutes. Then get a handful more shots and the same thing. No good. Got better when the babies came out in the spring.

I like gophers (ground squirrels) better. The gopher towns we hunt in Montana have WAY more critters and they are WAY dumber than prairie dogs. Can keep shooting until you're able to fry eggs on your barrel and they'll still be running all over the place ;) I usually take 3 or 4 rifles on a trip to avoid overheating barrels

Think you are talking about 6mm Creedmore? I have shot alot of PD's in MT w 105 Amax, ( surprisingly) explosive and good in the wind. I'll bet you'd like em.
I don't know about your locations, but I can usually see 10 - 15 miles beyond target in very desolate areas and ricochets are a non-issue.
I glass carefully & am careful near cattle. I use a 6X47 Lapua fwiw. Happy shooting in MT-

One thing that friends have done to good effect is to move so that their direction of fire is more parallel with the direction of the wind.

we were mentored to setup and shoot into the wind whenever safe and practical. keeps some of the noise out of the town, as well as helping to manage holdoff.

I was using some TNT bullets a bullet known for being very soft. These where not from the hard batch described below.
i use tnt's in several calibers. i have always taken them to be very frangible, but you personally have had ricochet problems with them? how long ago, or recent? thanks

When shooting on flat land even with a soft bullet they can and do bounce. What is odd is from my location I can not normally hear them ricochet. A person several hundred yards to the side can hear them ricochet. I should say I shoot from the ground so the angle to the ground the bullet travels is very very shallow. The last time a person said any thing about it was just last summer.

Maybe it is not really an issue when shooting from a bench or off a vehicle but I normally do not shoot that way for PD. Plus I cannot hear most of them any way so I can not really say one way or the other.

On a side note I do not use a silencer for shooting PD. I have tried it but they get too hot too fast. They are handy on a new town where you don't know how fast they will go down and stay down where only a few shots will be taken.
