best state for pd ?

was planning on going out west for a pd hunt near mid june. anybody have any favorite dog towns areas their willing to talk about? we were thinking eastern montana or north dakota? would like to see some action, this will be my first trip.

Sure, all ya gotta do is to list publically all your best fishing honey holes and where your biggest whitetail buck hangs out? ;D (sorry, couldn't resist)

As a suggestions since this is your first time out, I would highly recommend hooking up with an outfitter. I say this so you have fun and get some shooting the first time out.

If your just running out on your own the first time and have no real spots to hit. It can get dicey. Sure the local fish & wildlife/BLM folks will help point you, but they point all who ask to the same spots and come June, these spots are pretty gun shy. Guys like myself, who have spots in several states, are protective of their "honeyholes" the same way a hunter/fisherman protects their favorite spots. They take time and dedication to find & lotta time to cultivate landowner permission in some cases.

But they are out there. But for a 100-150$ per day is small coin for insurance to get on some decent shooting when one considers the time and money your spending already..

in wy the game wardens have a list of ranchers that have a pd problem, they will send it to you and you can call a number to get a location you feel good about,
i have don this with success but schedule 2 ranches so if the first is nominal i give the second a try.

most owners will as a 50-100 a day traspass fee, some will not.

pick a small town and call the warden covering that zone, they seem to be better than to larger city contacts.

Thanks guys ! I didn't figure on pd hunting to be such a secret. I can relate to the deer hunting honey holes though. if I could convince my friends of using and outfitter I'm all in. Is it usually 100-150 per person ?

I live in Montana and I can tell you the plague wiped out the prairie dogs, generally speaking. You might find a pocket where they wern't hit but all the ranches I hunted, the dogs are now gone especially in Eastern Montana where I did a lot of shooting. So, before spending a lot of money I would spend a lot of time on the phone to find a spot to shoot. Good luck.

Central South Dakota, don't forget the VHA Hq are there, and Eastern Colorado. The game warden suggestion is very good.

Apparently, there are a few dogs left in Montana, small isolated pockets. Talking to a rancher, he said the plague came through when he was a kid and it was several years before the dog population came back. Several years. I'm just going by what he said. I haven't read any scientific data. Anyone else?

how many bodies in your group? we find 4 is just right, partner up when you get there, some like to walk, some sit all day, plus cheaper gas and motel bills, unless camping. a lot of small towns have city parks w/good accomodations. last year we lost 4 towns(the best ones of course) 2 ea. to plague and poison. at least the poison left some seed, for 3-5 yrs. down the road. vha mag. has lots of guide services, might find a resonable price there. good luck, tom. p.s. just started working w/75 gr. vmax in that 25-06. 100 gr. horn. sp do pretty good, 1" @100, good enough for goats!

We have 3 guys going out. I'm sure we will split everthing up. Plan on hunting coyotes also. Tom I'm glad that 06 is working for you. I figured you would get it shooting. thanks for the info on the parks.
