wind flag practice drill

saying I suck at wind reading is an understatement,,I came up with a drill I been doing about twice a week for a month or so,,my rifle shoots really good groups and is zeroed dead on in a no wind calm condition,,
what I do is shoot one shot at each dot and wait one minute and shoot the next dot,,with no sighters just watch the flags and shoot one shot and wait a minute and shoot and so on,,no adjustments made on scope for the 20 shots

the wind was really rough here today and switching from every direction with enough force to blow the 68 gr Berger 3/4 an inch to an inch when it was full value which is the trick for me determining what percent of that I am getting,,
at least I am trying to get a handle on it,,and I think shooting with no sighters and waiting between shots is helping me, I dont know of any other way to get better in wind than to shoot in wind so thats what I am trying,,
today I only had 4 really bad shots out of 20 which is better than I was doing but I still have a long ways to go,,
anybody got any tricks to speeding up the learning curve??

this is todays target,,shooting 6PPC with 68 Bergers and 29.5 VVN 133

No tricks here to share. Just practice. But I like your drill I think it's more efficient. What distance are you shooting?

that is 100 yards,,IDK what speed the wind was but it was pushing the 68 gr bullet at times an inch or a tad more,,the way the land lays here at the farm wind switches are a nightmare,,I get a headwind the most and left to right next and as you can see sometimes it can switch from a headwind from 12 or 1 oclock and switch to a full value wind from 9 oclock faster than you can decide to take the shot and actually take the shot,,I think that is what I need to work on most,,sometimes I am too slow on the trigger,,

I am going to try and get a camera that will record 20 minutes and video it next time so I can go back and see exactly what my flags were showing at each shot and be able to look at the target and see where it hit,,I am gonna have a target at the bench and try and mark it between shots where I was holding for each shot ,,there was 4-5 of those shots I held outside the line and still wasnt enough,,

I'm going to give that a try. Did you hold on the dot for each shot or hold off for wind?

Rich

I held where I "THOUGHT" I needed to to hit the dot,,worked some and didnt work most the time,,but no sighters and waited at least a minute between shots,,

Idea. Get a target laminated, put up a regular target and shoot at the dot with your 1 min intervals. On the laminated target mark wind direction and speed at each target you shoot then transfer this information to the target you shoot. You now have a record of your wind estimation and what it did to the bullet.

Next time I get my PPC out to practice I'll give this a try.

This may or may not help or make much sense to some.
I like that drill. The one thing I would add conditions are so different day to day. I would add the step of shooting a couple 5 shot groups before the drill to fine tune your gun. Going preloaded with 29.5 of N133 is not a bad place if you must go preloaded. Some of that horizontal maybe in the load

I like the drill. I would just want to be sure I was in tune before practicing the drill

Your load may be wind sensitive if you work up a load with no wind and open up and inch in wind I'd say wind sensitive . You need to read tony borers book .
Great read very helpful he explains it well.

Tim I went to the shamrock sat and watched y'all shoot . And there was some great wind reading skills exhibited there. Wind was hard and switching. There was also some good groups shoot. You did well Tim singleton

Use a wind probe to estimate the amount of wind you hold for... and a wind flag for the angle the wind is moving..

Well I appreciate that. I struggled to stay in tune on top of the windy conditions. I haven't been shooting competion but 3 years. That was as tough conditions as I've seen.
Thanks again

Learn to shoot keeping both eyes open. Practice not taking your eyes off the flags while you're shooting or reloading the rifle. No looking down for shells between shots.

Learn to call your shots based off what the flags are telling you.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks. I try to shoot with both eyes open but keep finding myself closing one eye . I will try harder Bart . I watched you Billy and Heath shoot some fine groups in bad conditions .
