Wide stocks

I agree. It seems to me that a wood stock dampens a lot of the vibration. especially when compared to the one plastic stock I have.

JRS, mine are all light guns with 3" fore ends. All are wood or wood and carbon fiber….. And about vibration, i use super feet seems to shoot better off them than when rest sat on concrete. Second i use the cheap Burris signature rings with the Delrin inserts and the guns shoot smaller than with the big name rings lapped in. Does this have anything to do with vibration ? I just shoot the smallest group ever and with a Dasher and a 17 lb. light gun …. .042…… jim

OK since you used boats as a stability issue earlier. I have a question for you. What is more stable a canoe or a canoe with outriggers?

My red gun shoots better than my blue gun... maybe it's about the dye in the plywood? However, I just added a 4" aluminum attachment, so I will get some real world results this weekend. Last match it stunk, and conditions were the best I've ever seen at deep creek.

That gun was red? Kind of looked pink to me.... ;)

Would it not be cheaper and just as effective if you made a front bag with a two or two and a half inch wide dip in the middle of the bag, so that the 3-inch wide forend only touched the bag on the outside half inch?

I did NOT use it as an "issue", but rather a reference. You seem to need to make an "issue" of it. BTW… it is called a maori. I hear someone calling you for dinner. Don't hurry back ;D Most of my questions were answered by one of our major stock makers. I'm well satisfied.
Look you don't have to get smart about it. Wider is better, it is just more stable. All you have to do is shoot one and you will know. When trying to shoot 10 shots in 20 seconds the wider stock helps. Matt

Matt, All of that is true if you race the condition, but if you don't does all of this matter? What do you think about that Alex?…….jim

The way it was explained to me, is that the vibration plays a very small part. The major concern is the "removal of material that directly affects the the stiffness, strength and integrity of the stock". "If you want the stock to ride on rails attach rails to the stock". Sounds like good advice to me.

Jim, my 3" has such a high center of gravity I have to hold it down in the bag or it will twist right out of the bag. The gun shoots fine, just makes it harder on the shooter. I sold my st1000 a while ago and it would be a better comparison to the 4" I have now. But your right, if your picking your shots then I don't think it matters.

Jim, Alex did ok. Alex and Jim are right. If you get the center of gravity lower the gun will track better. Years ago they made the rails on a heavy gun real wide (18 Inches) and they moved them up above the barrel. They were super stable and that's why the rule on the sandbag got changed to single bag up front. Now that rule seamed to have disappeared so we can build under slung guns again. Jim I shoot at Williamsport and you very seldom can pick a condition. The wind is always blowing and usually 3 ways at once. If you can't run them you are dead in the water most days. Matt

I'm also a runner. And I shoot at Byers so if you don't run them and try to pick your conditions you might not ever get to shoot. Some matches we shoot are in 50mph wind.

Anyway that's what I love about this PR&T Hammerhead, it's wide and low.

If you don't like wide stocks, then don't use them. You will have an advantage over those who have to suffer with vibrations and cosmic winds affects and innovation.

I think a glued and screw stock shoots better than a bolt in due to transmitting the vibration directly to the wood. Now when i say picking a repeatable condition to where you can run ten rather than racing it. I know the wind blows at the least 3 ways to 1000 berm. Racing can bit you much more than picking if your patient……… jim

I agree but running is my style. One of the guys who shoots with us, just holds off and he says sometimes holds off the target. I'm not brave enough to hold off paper or even out of the blue.

If conditions are the same tomorrow as they were today, it won't matter what stock I have. I couldn't get 2 off in a condition to save my life, and it never stopped changing or came back. How do you fix that? ;D
