Wide forearm stocks

jvw2008

Lose the Second and we lose them all.
Back in 2012, IBS modified their stock rules to allow for up to a 5 inch forearm and a 2.5 inch width butt stock. I'm looking for some feed back regarding the popularity of these wider stocks in competition, their true effectiveness on reducing torque, and how much additional weight these stocks create when trying to bring a build in under weight for LG.

Thanks,
Jerry

Unless I'm mistaking in 600-1000 yard IBS matches LG stock can't be over 3" and weigh 17# or less HG is pretty much unlimited as I've aeen 6-8" wide stocks used in that class.

Which format of IBS matches are you speaking of?

I see nothing in the IBS rules on 600- 1000 light gun that limits the with as long as the weight is 17 lb. …… jim

You can go with the plates front and rear, i used UHMW i think that is what it's called but all i did was change to a lighter scope ring and base and i ended up at 2 oz. under the 17lb. weight….. jim

I've seen a couple of Williamsport Light Guns with those wide stocks and they don't seem to have a problem making weight.

The Shooter article "Benchrest Stocks with a 5"-Wide Forearm" prompted my questions for this thread. It looks like Shehane and Competitive Edge Gun Works are the initial makers for these stocks. The article states 5 inch forearms and 2.5 in wide butt stocks are legal as of 2012. This change was approved by IBS, NBRSA, and Williamsport. I don't see much need for the wider forearm unless the cartridge you are shooting creates a lot of torque. I'm happy with a 3" forearm on my 6.5 Creedmoor, but I could sure see the advantage of a wider forearm on a 300WSM or 7mmSAUM.

It sounds like you guys are saying making weight is not a problem. I'm curious if you feel there is an advantage on the bench using this non-traditional stock configuration.

A lot of guys at Williamsport are running 6 inch wide. There are a couple of different styles being shot there. Yes it helps keep the gun stable. Guys are shooting 10 shot strings in 20 seconds. Matt

Tracking ……. Tracking……. jim

They help a lot to reduce the rocking from opening the bolt and in general just let you be a little more sloppy. I don't think wide in the front and rear is a good idea, the gun will want to teeter if both bags are not perfectly flat. I prefer to have only the front wide.

I found i just did a 4" front and a 2" rear and it seems to help in tracking a lot, and it does stop the rocking. The rear seems to make it track better more than the front, because of the side tension. Mine are removable and can test one or both, but so far i like both. I can see the hit with free recoil, and it will shoot in the ten ring in full recoil position …….. jim
