I googled record 300 yard F class and
this came up . Not sure if it still stands or not . But my group is very similar in size . I think ??

Mark, Just so you know. That's 3-targets. 20 shots per target. the 10- ring is 3" the X- ring is 1 1/2 in.
The 3 targets were probably shot over several hours on the same day.
My experience is as the day goes from morning into afternoon the winds come up and the mirage gets bad.

Just to put things into perspective. I zero my scope at 300 yards and initial seating test at 300 yards
What people like Jim O’Hara have been able to accomplish at long range is mind boggling.
These top shooters and record holders have earned their spot in the record books.
Much Respect to all the Champions that grace these threads and take the time to share with others.

Jim, leave this place while you still have your sanity,,hurry.

I perfectly understand that . Just using it for a reference . That’s what I shoot is a F open off the bench with x ring 1.5 .

I would love to see what a true custom can do compared to mine just to be able to justify the expense . Do u have any 300 yard groups of more than 10 shots ?
No I don’t, I do all my testing at 1000 now. Honestly 30 shots at 300 would get boring not to mention heating up the barrel for no reason

Much respect to all these champions that grace these threads ?????? Holy shit . Now I see where the egos come from . Am I supposed to bow ???? Jeeezzz

That’s not how I read it. Just shoot the area matches, with the wind conditions of the other guys and refine your load. A lot of rifles can hold 1/2 minute in no to mild wind, now. The guys that have been doing this the longest and the best helped equipment evolve to what we now enjoy.

10% of the rifles on the line are capable of winning the match. Handling the wind the best, will always be what it comes down to.

The current record for F Open 300 yds is 200x30X by JohnnyI with a Bat/Dasher
The FTR record is 200x19X by Highpower with a Savage/223.
The 2019 BSWN F Open 1000yds was won by John Myers with a custom/300WSM. Second was Stephen Potter with a Savage/284.
Just pick one and shoot!

Tell u what ! Towanda , PA . 300 yards . Tell me when to be there . 20 shots at an F class target . I might be new but I’ll give u a run . And make sure to bring a custom !
Towanda is a hop skip and a jump from Williamsport. You should be setting world records in no time.. Your MOA Salvage should be a Hall of Famer in no time.

At our range Savage 6.5's and 6 BR's are as competitive as any "Custom" gun at 100-300 yard matches and at least one scored a sub-4" 5 shot group at 1000 yards.

I believe most "purists" to 1000 yard shooting would always point to individual component quality as a benefit of a custom gun over a Savage. For a fraction of the cost of a "custom" rifle build would the Savage not be a good choice if your club has a Hunter/Factory class for 1000 yards? (A Savage would be in the Hunter class at our range if it has a custom barrel on it.)

Is there something about the various 6mm Savages that I'm missing on why they are not highly recommended?

I do see quite a few listings of people trying to get rid of them but never read much on why. I do not own one.

I'm only looking for generalized responses on why someone might or might not recommend a Savage for 1000 yard shooting- not to start an argument between two possible camps.

I'll echo the pretty universal comments in this thread: I find the triggers on savages unacceptable for repeatable, consistent benchrest accuracy. I'm speaking from the experience of shooting 5 shots through a nice fellow's model 12 with a "tuned" accutrigger that had to have been about a 1lb pull. It felt heavy, and was not very crisp. I'm a trigger snob; triggers are very important to consistent accuracy for me. There was nothing wrong with the groups that rifle printed, but it felt like getting out of my wife's MINI and getting into a big truck.

What happened to put up or shut up ?
I’ll be there , just tell me when ! This should be a no brainer for such a great shooter . How much ?
